There was a thread some time ago regarding the price of boilers.
In it, some people mentioned examples of the price they had paid (recently) or had been quoted.
Naturally(?) now I cant find that thread. However, the information is probably out of date by now.
Does anyone have any recent prices of boilers they can quote?

I had three quotes for a 5" Ajax late last year, all between £1250 and £1270, Western Steam, Cheddar Boilers and Southern Boiler Services, generally about a 36 week delivery. I'm now 90% of the way through building my own.

Maxitrak are quoting prices for TIG welded copper boilers on their site, £1425 for a Simplex and £750 for Juliet, not sure whether this includes VAT or not. www.maxitrak.co.uk/secondhand.asp

Western steam are building a boiler for my 5" stirling for £1320 and it should be ready Jan 09 (25 weeks). I originally ordered one from Cheddar boilers for £1200 and it was supposed to be built in approx 32 weeks, after waiting approx 60 weeks and paying 60% down i asked for a full refund.

I get the impression that these companies only actually have one 'boiler maker', hence the ridiculous delivery times John

One of the most expensive quotes on this thread, hot from the press!
It's the lead time that gets me! JB

As a matter of interest Western Steam quoted me a delivery of about 24 weeks for the Simplex boiler, then they contacted me shortly after I placed the order saying they were about to start a batch of Simplex boilers and I got it a month later. Ron

Supply and demand. All the boiler makers seem to be one man bands and whilst few people are prepared to make there own the log lead times will continue. Now who knows where to get steel boilers made?

I can't really see aproblem with long lead times as long as the boiler is ordered as soon as you start cutting the frames!

Perhaps to add a comparison to this thread, has anyone had a recent quote for a boiler kit? The last boiler kit [ barrel, tubes, all the flanged plates and firebox wrapper] that I bought was for Rob Roy from Model and Miniature Railways of Rochdale in 1982 for £37.95. I was quoted £1412 in July for a boiler for 3-1/2" gauge Hall, to be completed about Jan/Feb 2009.

A Simplex boiler kit is £430 at present which I think makes the price of a finished boiler quite reasonable when you consider the amount of time, work and skill that goes into making one. I realise that a pro will make it much quicker and easier but it still doesn't look like a lucrative line of business to be in. Ron

Dont forget that a boiler kit will not include bushes, silver solder or flux. The price of silver solder has gone through the roof recently as has copper.

I see Maidstone Engineering are offering a couple of TIG welded copper boilers on Ebay, a bit pricey compared to the silver soldered ones though. Ron

Andy Me.... im getting ready to build a few steel "jill" boilers at work at the moment (i work at a well known, full sized boilermakers) I was going to see if there would be a demand for steel built ones to do it as i sideline obviously with coded welding, and plate certs. cheers ben
