Hi A question about normalising two bits of BMS 1/4" X 1" X 7" long. The construction manual for building Martin Evans "William" states that the bits of steel being used to make the connecting rods should be normalisied by heating up to bright red and then letting them cool down as slowly as possible. But on reading Tubal Cain's book on heat treatments, he states that it should be held at this temp for one hour per inch of section, does this mean it will be one hour because it's 1" wide or for 15 minutes because it's only a 1/4" thick. Does anyone have any ideas on this. Thanks Garry in not so sunny Jersey.

Garry,
15 minutes will be plenty. In a piece that size, once the whole part is red will be enough. Bury the pieces in lime or ash. If you were doing it in a heat treat furnace, you could just turn the furnace off and let the part cool down as the furnace does.
Regards,
Doug E.

I do it for all the rods , I use fire bricks , I form sort of a box from the bricks and place the metal in , heat it to red hot keep the heat for a while ( not very long ) then cover it with more bricks and heat them , then let them cool at room temperature . It works fine , it is not perfect but satisfactory , the metal does not distort during machining.

Bein' a dumb ol' country boy, I got an open fire, and a wood stove in the kitchen - stick 'em in one or t'other at night and fish 'em out in the morning

That was the recommended way over here Tel, but then we got soft and fitted central heating. Regards Ian.
PS. Garry, don't forget the magnetic rule, if it no longer is magnetic when it's red hot, it's reached a state of annulment.

Or about 30 seconds in the woodburner to get copper plates red hot for flanging into boiler plates, that's how I did mine.
