I'm thinking of a simple oval ground level track around the new house, probably in both 5" and 7 1/4" with about 30ft radius curves and longer straights between. Both gauges will use one 'common' rail which I guess will receive twice as much wear as the other two. Now, I know I'm unlikely to be able to measure any wear in my lifetime but on a conventional track does the inside or the outside rail wear at different rates and if so could I take advantage of that so that the wear is evened out?

I don't know the answer directly, but our club track has the common rail on the inside. Whether this was to ease wear problems or not I don't know. On our public running days (10 per year) this gets heavy use, but there are no there are no significant areas of wear on the track.

The rail on the outside of the bend will wear first due to the action of the flange. Unless you are running long rigid wheelbase items around it I wouldnt worry. My parents track has been down for the past 30 od yeas with no sign of untoward wear on Ali track.

G'day all
From the home of prototype polygauge track it didn't seem to worry people in South Oz. Funny thing was that standardisation only made it worse; instead of one station yard with 3 mainline gauges we finished up with two. Gauges. 5'3", 3'6" & 4'8 and a bit". A 3 gauge turntable was quite interesting, work it out!
Just make sure the common rail is not on the platform face side.
