I'm having a frustrating time renewing my home and contents insurance. Seems insurance companies think I'm an Oddball because I have £30k of outbuildings containing growing contents of approx £15k. Seems they struggle with anything other than a house and garage.
One stumbling block is the fact that I don't have window locks on the dozen opening lights in the conservatory despite full security on the house and workshop proper.
Dialog is currently with RIAS, my current insurers, and Saga having proved unhelpful despite insuring several club members. I've also just made contact with NFU after their Sunday Paper Ad..
Anyone else experiencing similar problems?

I too have found Walker Midgley very helpful.

Insurance companies and the police prefer everything to be as secure as possible on the outside - if someone manages to get into your conservatory they then can spend more time and can make more noise overcoming the internal locks. If someone was battering away at a neighbours window I'd be suspicious but if someone was doing the same in a conservatory? I'd either never even see / hear them or assume it was a bit of DIY.
I'd go for walker midgley as well - you've got the peace of mind and proper cover.

I found that my house insurers wouldn't extend the policy to cover my workshop which is in my garage in a separate block away from the house. I talked to the chap (forgotten his name)from Walker Midgley about it at the Midlands ME exhibition two years ago and he was very helpful indeed and arranged cover for just the workshop contents at a fairly modest premium. Worth a 'phone call at least, in my view.

The NFU would be worth a call, they are more than happy to cover outbuildings / workshops etc, having said that Walker Midgely do offer a very comprehensive package.

I'll conclude this in case anyone does a later search. NFU were helpful but extending their outbuilding cover was very expensive as they would only cover on a new for old basis. (every Myford must be covered for approx £15k plus all other machinery on the same basis!). I now have a standard Home and contents policy with SAGA and a Model Engineers policy organised by Walker Midgley. The later covers machinery on a like for like basis with tool and tooling new for old. Materials and the ongoing project is also covered. Both companies have been informed of the other policy.

I forgot my house is the only one round here that hasn't been burgled.
