After much searching of the tinternet, i can't find the difference between the round and square window panniers of the 57xx Class. I am trying to detail the tanks and outside of a 5" pansy. (position of water filler, lifting rings etc. )Does anyone have any info and /or drawings / photos of the top of the tanks of a square window 57xx.
Many Thanks

Hi Guys Good to see other 57xx fans. Below are links to three photobucket albums with around 300 detail shots from the South Devon Railway at Buckfastleigh (GWR 5786) and Didcot (GWR 3738). s144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/myfordmatt/Didcot%20010608/s144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/myfordmatt/Buckfast240906/s144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/myfordmatt/Buckfast080707/(Don't forget to to click 'Full size' to see a bigger version.) The Didcot album includes some useful shots underneath the loco: axles, motion plate etc. To orientate yourself when looking at these, note that the front two axles are painted red, the rear is painted grungy grease. Hope these are useful. Let me know if you require high res versions of any of the photos. Also, note that on the first page of the Didcot album, the three images ending in 108, 109 and 110 are from GWR 3650 Mike – I would be most grateful if you could also send me the drawings: matt at pulzer dot org Last, don't waste an afternoon downloading these individually. Send me an email and I'll send you the lot zipped from my ftp site. Cheers Matt

This is quite a nice GWR GA, showing the main differences between the Pansy suspension and the real McCoy – helps to interpret my Didcot photos. Cheers Matt

Model Prototype – GWR 3738 (from underneath) Much the most interesting Pansy I have ever seen is currently under construction by Peter Hitchin. I snapped the images in the following link at Ally Pally last year. Note the BETWEEN cylinders valve gear and true-to-prototype suspension. s144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/myfordmatt/Peter%20Hitchin%2057xx/On the very first page of LBSC's comprehensive write up of Pansy he says that between-the-cylinders valve gear would not work efficiently. It will be interesting to know how well PH's 'Pansy' operates when it has been finished. I think PH made his own castings, but I'm not certain. Cheers Matt

I've been in contact with the reference section at the National Railway Museum in York and ordered everything they have on 57xx drawings:
0-6-0T Pannier '5700' class 0-6-0T No. 7713 '5700' class spark arrester chimney 0-6-0T '5700' class 5700 GA 1/2 5700 GA 2/2 0-6-0 Tank '5700' class Maximum Cross Section DIA. B48 Arrangement of foot boarding and engineman’s seat Motion arrangement for '5700' '2251' and '9400' classes 1928 Arr't of flap plate for '5700' class 1930 Arr't of triple feed (sight type) lubricator 5700 class 1928 Arr't of smokebox 0-6-0 Pannier tank engines 5700 class 1928 Erecting plan of 0-6-0 Pannier tank engines 5700 class 1928 G.A. of 17 1/2''x 24'' cylinders for '5700' class 1928 Chimney spark arrestor for '5700' class 0-6-0T GWR 1935 Position & style of lettering on '5700' class engines 1936 GWR G.A. of cab & fittings for 0-6-0T '5700' class GWR 1928
At some point I hope to go to York and have a root around for other drawings. GWR made a policy of using the same parts on different loco types, so drawings of bits and bobs that may not be listed as 57xx specific may still be available, providing one knows what to look for – which I don't ;D. I suspect this is particularly true of cab fittings and 'plumbing', such as injectors. NRM provide A3, A2 and A1 reproductions, so it may be a while before I can share any of them, but I'll update everyone when I can.
Has anyone dealt with the GWR Soc at Didcot? I imagine they have a very good selection of drawings since they have just refurbished a 57xx.
Cheers
Matt
