I don't normally use capitals, but this is serious. Avast antivirus has a bug in it's latest download and thinks all programs written in Delphi contain trojans either win32: DELF-MZG or win 32 ZBOT-MKK. This includes Skype and loads of other programs, and it deletes them without warning. Advice from the geeks is to uninstall avast before it deletes half the files on your hard drive. So disconnect form the internet and remove Avast, DO NOT ALLOW IT TO UPDATE!! then you can download another antivirus program. Personally, I'm going back to AVG free free.avg.com/ww-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-editionDJ being helpful for a change!!

Hi Dr. J, I got p****d off with these antivirus programs slowing everything down a couple of years ago. Installed Linux instead of Windoze from here: pclinuxos.com/?page_id=180 and haven't looked back. Irun some Windoze programs under Wine, but for more complex applications such as Autocad, run Windoze XP on VirtualBox running on Linux and don't connect to the internet. Most Linux software you need comes free and Linux is inherently virus proof. Regards, Russell.

Hi Russell
Tried linux some years back (red hat and another one) but at that time I was supporting loads of windoze machines and writing high-flying web stuff and found it made life difficult, so I went back to 98 - only recently moved down to xp!! As you say - Billy Goat's microsloth windoze - total rubbish - man sould be sued out of his trousers then shot!

I tried RedHat about ten years ago (it was used on a file server in our office) and abandoned it for normal use as it wouldn't run things like Autocad and Solidworks. Wine was in it's infancy and I dont think VirtualBox had been thought of. PCLinux is much easier to maintain and you can even have Windoze 98, XP, Vista, 7 all running at the same time on virtual machines if you wish. I installed it as dual boot to still have the option of reverting to Windoze if necessary but I haven't booted Windoze for months.
Russell.

Gentoo all the way: desktop, laptop en netbook. Been running it for about 6-7 years now. To be honest just as much work to keep up, but of a different kind. Solidwurst in Virtualbox and that's the only thing that smells of MS in my house. Has anyone run a serious linux 3D cad?
Except my brothers pc which I'm afraid is only good to format c: and start all over.

My pc had a major hiccup last night, not sure if it was anything to do with the normally reliable Avast. Clicked on a myspace link on google and weird things started happening, kept getting a suspicious security setting page, somehow my firewall turned itself off and CPU usage constantly at 100%. Had to do a roll back as it seemed anything I googled brought up the weird security setting page. I couldn't update any anti spyware software so I tried the roll back and reloaded anti spyware through another search engine, result, nothing found? PC now running fine and not found anything missing? I'd still recommend Avast to anyone! Somebody somewhere will be unlucky enough to find a new trojian or virus before their av supplier finds it and issues a suitable update, although this issue seems to be due to a bad update.

I have Avast on my Vista machine, but my partner's XP machine with Avast was showing today similar symptoms to that described by Simon: 100% CPU usage and various IE 'Not Responding' messages. I know lots about applications, but bugger all about inner workings, so I just used task manager to end the IE process and all now seems to be sweeetness and light..... JB

Havoc,
I've tried a few basic Linux CAD programs and found nothing that comes anywhere near Autocad or Solidworks both of which seem to run better in Virtualbox than on a native Windoze installation. Russell.

Have you tried Varicad? I have run it on Linux box and was very impressed. And as for AVAST, well it's all sorted out - I will continue recommending it :-)
