I notice that more members are posting what can only be described as ad's in their posts , one even has a signature advertising footware, does this mean that we are all free to do the same ? I suppose considering the number of banner ads on this forum some of the newer members might be misled into thinking that this is what we want , for me they are mistaken , and there is a perfectly good sales/wants section anyway. How do other members feel about this ?

You can get rid of banner ads by using a freeware application called "adblock plus" Don't know if it works for IE type browsers but it certainly does with Firefox and Google Chrome jack

I use both firefox and adblock , but find that I am having to continuously update the filter list , perhaps I am not using it correctly. You got me wrong Norm , my fault , I was refering to commercial ads in posts not members who wish to dispose of surplus. As a "trader" myself , I am usually careful to abide by the forum rules but one of the posts has a flashing sig for a brand of sports shoe which is larger than the post. Even more annoying is the ad for Laura Ashley , she making loco's now ? My question still stands , can we all do it ?

I guess it's a fine line Abby, a high proportion of threads here have links to various suppliers, I see this as normal for it's usually the case of one member trying to help another and directing them to a company that may be able to help. Having said that you have to draw a line somewhere and in the two examples that you have given I would say that perhaps they do cross that line, not so much that they are a big deal now but if left alone what comes next?

...one of the posts has a flashing sig for a brand of sports shoe which is larger than the post... I think Abby, you will find that it was a spammer (usual hint - first post is an advert ) and his/her postings have already disappeared. Unless I am wrong? - in which case, can you please post a link to the offending item? Chris

I don't see any "adverts for footware", but that's because I use "NoScript" with my Firefox. However ... in the interest of experiment I have temporarily disabled "No Script" and yes indeed - now I can see B&Q sale advert. Is it though, accidental, caused by forum member who doesn't know how to embed piece of YouTube? or is it something nasty as you are suggesting? Don't know Chris ps get yourself noscript.net/ (assuming you are using Firefox) and you will be oblivious to all this crap (like myself)

If you come across something like that just report the post and the offender is toast as soon as it comes to our attention.
There was one reported the other day, which was promptly got rid of, but I don't see 'em as I also run 'no scripts' so please REPORT, otherwise we don't know about it.

I am still of the opinion, that in this case it is simply a member, who hasn't got a clue about computers and a victim himself of dodgy YouTube practices. Not to be confused with spammer - these are indeed easily dealt with by using "Report to Mod" function.

Mike, of course I have no problem with the way YouTube/Google etc finance their business using adverts. The "dodgy" practice I had in mind was the way they catch unwary/ignorant etc and slip in these adverts into our forum. I guess if the original poster provided a link instead of using embedded html we would not be subject to the adverts. So instead of using: <objecty width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5ka-aseTUvQ&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5ka-aseTUvQ&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></embed></objective>
he could have used: www.youtube.com/user/ArkAngelDesign#p/a/u/0/5ka-aseTUvQand everything would be hanky dory ;D Chris ps I have "doctored" the dodgy link to avoid the same crap as caused by original poster, so it doesn't actually work, but illustrates the point (hopefully).

You must be from USofA judging from some of your vocabulary? That probably explains cultural difference in attitudes to advertising Hoardings are not allowed here in UK, so on my way to town I just admire scenery, without having to ignore anything... You should be able to embed without the advertising by using BB code and the url address for the video: At least I hope so - if not, than perhaps my theories are a lot of nonsense BTW my interest in this "issue" is purely academic, since (as I have mentioned previously) I didn't even see the adverts, simply because I am using Firefox with noscript.net/Chris

Yes, it was "billboards" that made me think you were from across the pond. We don't have them here in wild North Devon BTW my experiment with embedding has failed miserably and even just using url link with BB code one gets adverts. Perhaps it is nothing to do with YouTube? Must be ProBoards than? Chris

Maybe this is an example of the kind of in-thread advertising abby means - the fifth post here. Put in something obvious but seeming relevant, then advertise your plumbing business!

Advertising links deleted in aforesaid post.
Mind you, advertising a plumbers in Arizona on a message board that has the vast majority of members in the UK doesnt seem particularly fruitful.

For some inexplicable reason I have still have a UTube advert for some centrifugal compressor and next to it an advert from Wickes for TV/Satellite plugs.
I get my balls chewed off for offering a trio of redundant tools.
Frankly, what is really happening?
