I'm starting to plan what to build as the next project. I want a larger engine having already built an AJAX but would prefer a shorter wheel base just in case I ever get my way for a garden track.
I think a 4-4-0 such as Maid of Kent, Super Claud or Don Young's Glen would perhaps be the best choice as well as appelaing to me visually.
I would hugely appreciate any thoughts on which would be the best of those three. If anybody can point me in the direction of build articles for Don's Glen that would also be great.
Cheers

Such a decision is a hugely personal thing but I've always thought something like a 7 1/4 Juliet would be a good "small" loco in the larger gauge.

If Don's Glen wasn't serialised in his "Locomotives Large & Small" mag, then you're out of luck for build instructions. However, you could always have a look at what he says about his other locos, both in LLAS and ME (Elaine, Mountaineer, Fishbourne, County Carlow.)
I'd check on price and availability of castings before you start, too. That might influence your choice - or see what you can pick up on eBay?

Don's Glen series ran in LLAS nos 1-7, Nov '79 to May '81, same time as the Hunslet.

I've been building a Glen for some years now, with some years to go ! ( so might be slightly biased ) I've built most of the easy bits, so have only the hard ones left However, seeing John Ellis's version at Harrogate this year might speed me up. That one is heavily modified though to be more powerful ... more adhesion weight etc. I took a couple of photos of that one, but have taken a lot of photos of the full size 'Glen Douglas' at Boness. All the best, Pete

Ooops ! I should have mentioned that there is something to bear in mind when choosing a Glen -- It is a bit smaller than normal.
The scale is 1" == 1' rather than the normal 1-1/16

Pete,
Thanks for that, I did wonder why the Glen appeared to be a smaller engine. At the end of the day there does not appear to be too much in it, I'll wait and see what if any castings turn up second hand between now and the Autumn.
