For me silver steel pins every time, loctited in. A broken roll pin in the valve gear has caused me considerable grief on Marie E.

hi Pete, i had roller pins in this application once and had the same thing happen when a cylinder siezed due to lack of oil. I reckon the consensus will be for solid steel pins. cheers, andy

Thanks for the input guys, as you can see I've now fitted the new solid pin. The other side is still sound but rather than go to the trouble of drifting the wheel off to fit a new solid pin I've cheated and drifted a suitable steel pin into the roller pin. Time will tell if this works but I didn't fancy at this stage taking all of the wheels off to fit new pins. At least I know that I can easily take any of the axles off if this needs doing again at some point in the future. The axle is now refitted to the frames and motion, so i havent lost to much time, many thanks for the help... Pete Attachments:

Evening all Ok so now that I'm free again ( not working) I can return to Lassie's build, I'm still hoping to get her in steam over the next few weeks as long as work doesn't interrupt my progress.. Here is the blower tube rings to LBSC's design, I still have to drill the No.70 holes in the rings otherwise it's finished. It's a very simple design which I may change at some point in the future but since I'm on a mission to get her in steam it'll do for now. Attachments:

One more picture for tonight, the smokebox has now been painted in heat resistant BBQ paint from B&Q, iirc it's rated for 650c so should easily handle the temperatures reached in this area. Next job will be the big step of sealing the boiler to the smokebox and then permenantly to the frames. Biggest problem for me here I suspect will be securing the outer steampipes in the back of the smokebox, think I may need help from someone with smaller hands here, watch this space to see if she said yes.... One more for tonight, I decided to finish the blower ring and fit it to the boiler, also fitted the superheater assembly as well. Getting the blower pipe between the wet and hot headers was fun but I bet it was a damn site easier than the fun that I'm going to have tomorrow trying to get this lot all connected up in the smokebox.... Hi Pete,
All looking really good and enjoy your threads, just a note on the smokebox paint you can also use hammerite satin black smooth and although it doesnt rate its temperature its easily heat resistent and i've used it many times on smokeboxes..

Pete, that looks awfully fragile, I hope the overall design caters for that! JB

Thanks Steve, btw it was good to meet you and Jason at the Midland ME, hope Jason is enjoying his new project?... Hi JB, well it's to Curly's drawings, the bulk if it was already built by the original builder, I've added the steam pipes and now the blower rings. It's going to be a bit fiddlely getting the outside steam pipes fitted to the inside of the smokebox but once they are done the other parts should be easy enough. It doesn't help that the superheater is a little twisted but hopefully not enough to stop it lining up, I guess I'll find out one way or another soon enough.. Pete

I check for your progress every time I log on. I am at the early stages of building the HL just made a start on the the tender. I fellow club member has a HL which he acquired a year or two ago.He has had one or two problems with the twin blowers which seemed to be working against the twin chimney it was a bugger to sort as the fragile tubing made it difficult to correct. Less of a problem if you have made it from scratch I think. All the best look forward to the next photo's. I am making up a folder of the images which are very useful so once again thanks. Mark ;D

Hi Mark It's good to hear from another HL owner, she's a pretty loco even after Thompson's rebuild she still retains Gresley's graceful looks. Regarding the tender if I was building HL from the beginning I wouldn't follow Curly's drawings, I'd build the tender to the same drawings as Don Young's Doncaster. You can get a brass kit for the body from Model Engineers Laser to speed things up which Malcolm has scaled down for 3 1/2 gauge. It's certainly something on my list for the very distant future once I've finished FS. For now I'll live with the tender as it came despite it's unprotypical looks as I wish to finish HL ASAP so I can return to my love FS.. Interesting what you say regarding HL's blower rings, Curly does state to drill the holes facing slightly inwards to achieve a good draught perhaps this was the problem? I hope to have more updates over the next few days, as the saying goes, " watch this space".... Pete

Hi Pete It may be too late now, and it might not be possible because of the header location, but I normally put a hexagon standoff on the hollow stay for the blower to take the pipe union forward of the wet header. That way you can undo the pipe union easily inside the smokebox especially if you put some copperslip on the threads of the union nut. Its good to see you making progress again, work can be such a pain. Regards Paul

Hi Paul
Unfortunately the hollow stay is immeadiately behind one of the tubes bending down from the wet header, it was this configuration which made it such a pain to connect. Not sure if it's just a bad design or if the wet header tubes are a little off, still it's all fixed now so I'm not going to worry about it till it needs any maintenance. The smokebox is now sealed to the boiler, I just pray there's no leaks when she's tested as I don't fancy going through it all again anytime soon. Pictures later
Pete

Hi Pete Comming on nicely I have user LBSC's bent tube blowers on a number of occasions with great success. The holes need to incline in slightly fo it to work though. Keep up the good work Andrew

Evening all Few update pictures for today, first up is a general view showing the smokebox now sealed to the Boiler although not yet permanently fitted to the frames. The 1/8 pipe sticking out over the valve chest is the oil feed for the cylinder awaiting construction of the steam pipes. Attachments:

One of the steam pipes having been silver soldered together, one last job here before cleaning is to fit the oil feed pipe which I'll also silver solder permanently to it. Attachments:

The finished steam pipes and oil feed assembly, not prototypical but practical and quick to do. Components for oil feed are a 90 degree 1/8 oil clack valve that's been modified to take unions both ends, a 1/8 tee and then two equal lengths of 1/8 pipe connected directly into the steam pipes. Easy to make and easy to maintain once the boiler is fitted. Having said that I do need to replace the inner screws that hold the steam pipes to their chests for hex heads to make life a little easier... Attachments:
