This is the last engine left on the plan list , as a matter of fact this engine I started many years ago , I built the boiler and cut the main frames but the castings failed to materialise and the project was placed on the shelve , now I have finished all other projects and I have received a few castings as you know from the other thread I am restarting the project hoping that castings will arrive as progress of work goes on . I have to rely on the person with the patrons to do this for me , he is of the relaxed type , if you ask me too relaxed ;D ;D ,. this is a photo of the full size engine , this photo shows the engine in a later configuration , the original had round top boiler and that is what I am doing , the engine was build in UK and have Stevenson valve gear , American style with the valve outside like the Manor . Main frames : the frames have a joggle , this in itself is not a problem , I have done that on few engines just using vice and the hammer reasonably accurate but on this engine at the joggle , the inner and outer motion plates are fitted , this raised a problem for me as I don't have the equipment or the skill to produce all these surfaces at the correct angles therefore I opted for a stepped frame at the same location , the frames are joined by rivets and silver soldered , now the motion plates inside and outside will have a square ends and that I can do .When all assembled nothing will be visible . Hi Shawki,
It'll be great to see this one come together. Do you have any more info on the original (Name, operator, uses, etc.) ?
Cheers

Shawki a great choice for your last 5 inch loco almost as good as a 12 class. By the way I have just finished machining a set of cylinders castings for a 5inch NSW 36 class using your method of two boring bars between centrers it worked a treat now onto to the valves Olly

Thanks for the remarks , smiffy , the engines were built by Vulcan Foundry for the NSW government railways , started in service 1887 and was intended for passenger services . 12 engines were built and these were not popular with the crew because they were slippery due to low factor of adhesion . Olly , good luck withe the 36 , I built one , I sold the engine but it is in our club , I see it every now and then , he repainted it in green .C 36 is a great engine you will have good fun with it . Arther Muir designed the engine and built 10 of these for sale , the plans are very difficult as they were intended for him , many dimension and details are not clear , no sub assembly drawings , I don't know if anyone else has built one other than Arther . DJ , I have built 27 boilers and don't want to build any more , I will still be building something like rolling stock or an electric for a change , I am close to 73 and I have to slow down , I am on computers now , few days ago I purchased a Trainz simulator to drive full size trains on the computer ( Trainz 2012 ) , I am still trying the Tutorials and not doing so good .

Shawki 73 is only an indication of how many birthday cakes you've had. You should know Model Engineering reduces you age for every year in the workshop. I know this is true because I'm 72 and the wife says she wishes I'd grow up and stop playing with trains. ;D ;D

Jim , I am not quitting the hobby or shutting the workshop , I hope this project will last for some time and as I said I hope to build other things such as rolling stock and/or an electric , who knows I even might claim equal rights and change my mind ( politicians do that ) ;D ;D .

Looking good Shawki! The Z17's are one of my favourite locos. I can't wait to see your 5" gauge model. It would be nice to see the NSWRTM's 1709 back in steam again. I have been told she will be back in steam for the 2015 160 years of NSW railways celebrations.

5inch , I assume you do know that Arthur build 10 engines and they are scattered all over the country , I have seen one of them and I believe they go very well , he designed the 5" version , produced the drawings and made the patterns and build 10 of them , He sold the business , from one hand to another , the plans and some patterns ended up with someone I know , he sucked me into building this model promising that he will supply the castings ( my cost ) , this has been going for many years , it just started to materialise and I am hoping that it will happen . The plans have a lot of information missing , they are in the head of the designer , there are no sub assembly drawings , the parts are scattered on the sheets anywhere , it will take time but I will work it out .Originally the cylinders were fabricated from a large number of bits and pieces but I have been promised castings at least for the cylinder blocks .

Little progress , main wheels done , I don't want this project to progress fast , I want it to last and keep me busy for a while . ;D Attachments:

More progress , bogie wheels . I can't put anything together at the time being because I don't have all the castings , for example there are parts missing like main horns and cylinder blocks that are stopping me from erecting the main frames . I will continue to make parts that I can and hope they will fit OK in their place ;D . Attachments:
