Had this running on air today, thanks to the help I had on the forum, set to 80% cutoff in full gear, started first time, its in 1/6th scale so was moving some heavy metal for the first time, it is designed to work at 100lb pressure, started it at 80lb and it worked down to about 10lb in forward gear and about 6lb in reverse, reverse felt slightly smoother, any ideas regards Jeff

As likely as not the valve gear design is responsible for a better back gear. You say 'slightly' so my advice is to steam and enjoy. Getting the gear to favour forward rather than reverse could mean a redesign and a remake of many components. The 'slightly' may be less under steam.
Good luck!

G'day Jeff I suggest a photo posted on this site will cure your minor problem. You may have to get used to firing around the chimney, loco in reverse with a mirror fixed to the bunker so you can see the gauge glass. ;D Regards Ian

Hi Ian, its still on the rolling road after testing, as my other half wants the kitchen re-vamped, the old one worked for 20years why fix it if its not broken ;D I have included a picture with a 12 figure to show the scale, some of the fittings on the lifting arms need to be finished regards Jeff Attachments:

what a lovely chassis! wonderful! great to see so much prototypical detail, though i suppose in 9.5"g that's not too difficult! you have done a superb job! i do like the old time loco's... much more character IMHO and so rarely seen modelled these days. cheers julian

Jeff that is a beautiful fine scale model and with the added bonus of being a MR locomotive . Is it the Johnson 0-4-0 saddle tank version? Jim

G'day Jim
I hope that bloke gets the nut on the crankpin of the front wheel-set before you put the air on it again! He obviously has been very busy.
Thanks for the pictures.
BTW I'd rather be working on the kitchen than doing what has kept me out of the workshop, namely digging up my storm water drainage to get to the tree roots that have grown in to it. When I put the storm water drainage in 20 years ago I hired an electric hammer to break through the lime marl and compacted clay.

Hi thanks for the kind comments, but the credit for the start of this build goes to a Mr Cattell, who had made a lot of the motion work, (not assembled), and quartered the wheels, it came with a prototypical boiler tested to 200lb, but unfortunately no plans, I will continue his work to complete a Johnson 0 4 0ST 1322/1116A class c1890s, only 20 were made and none survive, so will be working from pictures and overall dimensions taken from the Derby works drawing, ED88 regards Jeff

just an update on the build, pole reverser made and fitted, all the gear stripped and checked, valves re-timed, with much better results, boiler test fitted and aliened with smoke box, as you can see I am using a 1/6th scale figure to help keep the fittings to near scale as possible as there are no working plans with this build regards Jeff Attachments:

That poor bloke on the footplate is going to get his freckle burnt if he's not careful Jeff.

G'day Jeff
What is that bloke doing with his "freckle" so close to the boiler?
I see that the sword of Damacles is about to swing across and get the fornicator.
Did the prototype have the chimney emerge from the middle of the firebox? Certainly saves trouble with pesky tubes!
A serious question, did you make the boiler? It looks a fine job. How is the barrel joined to the front sheet of the firebox?
Having your assistant, even if not clothed to OH&S requirements, will help you get things in perspective. For your great efforts I do hope somebody can get you atleast a photo of the prototype cab.
Regards Ian

All looks good , just one question , are the nuts on coupling rods locked ?

Hi Ian, the barrel is silver soldered into the front of the fire box, it was put together by G.B. Boiler Services, but not fabricated by them
Hi Shawki, the nuts on the connecting rods are cross drilled and pined, the pins have been removed as I have to make some spacers regards Jeff

I have managed to do a bit more work on the Midland 0 4 0, thanks to 280vs who kindly sent me a general arrangement he had copied from the National Railway Museum, the brakes on this engine are quite a prominent feature and are operated both by steam and a hand screw, the reach rod is slotted for this purpose but I have no idea how it was engaged / disengaged, so for the time being I will go with the hand screw, all pieces have been fabricated and I had a trial fit today and was quite pleased with the result Attachments:
