Time has come to make up a pair of CI piston rings, has anybody used moped ones as available here.http://www.mopedland.ukfsn.org/atozring/
They appear to be much cheaper than most ME suppliers at £8.00,.

Hello, They may be cheaper BUT they are radially much stronger than we want and will wear your bore. For our steam use we require very little radial pressure.

I assume that your cylinders are cast iron. I have automobile piston rings fitted to a 4" scale Hunslet tank that has been running for about 25 years, and they are still as steamtight as when they were fitted. There is no reason why they should wear your cylinders any more than they will wear an internal combustion cylinder, they certainly don't appear to have worn mine, regards Ian

I've used car rings on all the engines I've built, except No. 7 which has Villiers 6E 197cc 40th over size. They cost £3. 2" bore cylinders & it sails up my 1 in 10 gradient. E.W.

Thanks guys, I bored my (cast iron) cylinders to 38.5mm as this appeared to be the most common size. I'll get a pair and see how they go.

I bought rings nearest to the size I required , then bored the cylinders to suit & made the pistons.
