A few memories in that programme. I was a regular visitor to Cadbey as a child and I must be one of the youngest FR deviationists alive. We have cine film of me at the age of 7 riding a gravity train around the spiral at Ddault.

The programme had that cosy warmth that we don't seem to get in other, more commercial offerings these days. The home movies made the programme. I suppose that's why I like BBC4! I particularly liked his Lordship poking his face out of the spectacle window! JB

Well I was impressed...Holly got to all but open the show, and I only spotted one error in a whole hour of program! Also looking forward to next week.....shame we spent the best part of a day in the pouring rain to only get 30 seconds on the screen, but we didn't know at the time that other railways were getting screen time too. Some great stuff covering the hard work of the Fes, and lovely to see Cadeby there too.

All in all, a good programme. What a shame that the sound balance was not the best, the 'music' was overpowering at times unfortunately an all too common problem these days. Apart from this a thoroughly enjoyable programme and I'm looking forward to part 2.

What would present day health and safety say about the Rectory railway, I dread to think. But all in all, a good interesting programme.

Agreed, an excellent hour's entertainment, thanks for the tip ej. The shots of the quarry locos at work were particularly fascinating.
Roll on next week's episode!

ed,
was the error you spotted "brynglas" quarry?
i thought it was a marvellous programme too with some fascinating archive film. i had not seen before the colour film of the opening of the Talyllyn at whitsun in 1951 (showing messrs Trinder, Rolt, and Pat Whitehouse) or the BBC footage of the live broadcast in may 1957-presumed lost.
nice to see the narrow gauge pioneers being given full credit for starting the railway preservation movement.
cheers, julian

That wold be something to do with her having to wash 4 times for the benefit of the camera....and then they didn't use it!!

Watched this on iplayer - fabulous.
I particularly loved the way that a tunnel was blasted out by a bunch of interested pro's in their spare time.
Can you imagine the hoops you would have to jump through to undertake such works now?
Pete.
