Hello all, I'm currently at a loose end and looking for something to occupy myself with for the next year.do My thoughts have turned to producing another 5" gauge design and I've prepared the side and end views of the GWR 1361 class of 0-6-0 saddle tank loco's. Personally I think they would make an attractive little model which could be displayed on mantelpiece and yet be capable of some hard work especially on up and down tracks at Fete's etc., I'm going to try to attach a few drawing to this post and would welcome opinions on it. The full size had "Allan straight link" valve gear which I would include in the model and one advantage is that No 1363 still exists at Didcot with the GWS. What do you think, is it worth me spending more time on it ? Not very skillful at attachments on posts so please bear with me. If I am unsuccessful and you are interested, send me your e-mail address and I'll post them that way. [/img] Taff Attachments:

Hi Taff,Looks a nice loco,There are plenty of GW fans out there and its nice to steam a little loco, sometimes its a lot of work getting out a big tender loco just for a couple of hours work, plus what with the price of material ect i think it will be a nice project. Garry

Hello all, Sorry about that above and also for this delay. While trying to forward the other two drawings two rather attractive district nurses turn up to re dress the dressings on my leg ulcers and it was rather disconcerting. I'll give it another try. [/img] Taff Attachments:

If only I had the time, but so deep into other projects at the moment that any time spent in the garage workshop is doing something for someone else or the house.
Oh the boiler on the Station road Steam model is perfect. I was so disappointed when Neville Evans design for the 517 Fair Rosamund came out with all the tubes all over the place? The model has them all in line and well thought out.
Also what a shame that the current Emma Victoria in M.E. is a freelance engine when there are so many lovely 0-4-0's already in existence to be modeled.
Dear Taff go ahead and I may be able to squeeze one in during my retirement.
David.

Hi Taff, I think your idea for a model of a 1361 class loco is excellent and well worth pursuing. And it is great to see some detailed drawings to such a high standard.Keep up the good work!

Hello folks, Sorry for my long delay replying to your posts, been indisposed away from home I'm afraid but I'm back now. The response to my post has not been huge but nevertheless has been very encouraging both in the forum and privately so I've decided to go ahead. My idea was not to design a "super detailed" model but to produce an attractive design which those of us who wish can relax from the strict discipline of being a model engineer and build something your family can enjoy. My design will be for 5" gauge but I am investigating whether or not to triple dimension it with a view to allowing construction in 3/12" and 7/14" gauges as well. Opinions would be appreciated.
Pete.

Hi Pete Good to see you, she's a lovely looking loco, great drawings, I say go for it. Regarding the other two scales, why not? I'd expect the 5" to be the most popular though.. Pete

As it would be a small model, I suspect there would be considerable interest in 7_1/4", as there are not many small locos in that scale, and it will still be within the capacity of most small workshops.

In my view, they'd be interest in 5" and 7¼", but it may well be too small for 3½"

Here's a picture of a nice 5" one I snapped a few years ago at the Bristol show. It looks to be a well-made engine that has done some hard work. Perhaps one of the Bristol members will know who the builder was? (I did think twice about posting a picture of another person's property, but then again it WAS taken in a public place. I hope he doesn't mind - who knows, he may identify himself through this forum). Attachments:

The loco pictured above is the one I referred to in my post a few days ago, goes very well. There is a video of it here, 4.40secs into it, www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ej-3GXCFgrE does well once out of the yard pulling away up the 1 in 45, it's a cracking engine and would be great to see as a published design. I know the builder and can put Pete in contact if needs be.

Hello Chaps-------- Hello Peter----- I'm a bit late catching onto this thread but I'm surprised that you even feel the need to ask.... YES !! ABSOLUTELY !! Go ahead !! ;D ;D ;D ;D---It fits the bill on so many levels---- GWR,.... 6-coupled, .... GWR, ....outside cyls,.... GWR, ....saddle tank,.... GWR, .......car-boot transportable----- and have I mentioned GWR ..... I'm sure the lads at DIDCOT will be only too happy to help as well... Might I make an observation ?? Rather than one set of drawings with 3 sets of dimensions (always a chance of mis-reading etc) would it be possible to produce 3 independent sets instead ?? Have you any thoughts as to commercially available castings, etc that might do Maybe our friend Malcolm at Model Engineers Laser could do a "Body Kit" ?? That would help ----

What is there not to like for the beginner who would like a prototypical engine, doesn't have to have all the detail added if a builder decides to simplify, I could see it becoming very popular.

Darn sight better than a "Westernised" Simplex !!! UGH !! Nice, flat sided bunker with no compound curves

Hello all, Well for the past day or so I've been doing a little research into the 1361's and the more I look in to them the more I like them. Mention has been made of the large number of lovely rivets in the tanks but being chairman of the "Rivet Counters Fellowship" they don't worry me as far as drawing them is concerned (Yes, they are all done with a pen compass) or putting them in the metal. I have already made drawings of the wheels, cylinder motion, connecting and coupling rods and I've been wondering if it would be possible to start a thread about the design work involved is a similar way that folks are involving themselves in construction threads. I will attach the front view of the driving wheel and I'll try to make the patterns close to this but in the mean time if anyone knows of a similar existing design please let me know. [/img] Taff. Hmmmmm.... I think I've done that right. Attachments:
