I have inherited couple of these toolholders SDJC L/R 1010-03S and loved using them until I had to replace inserts I tried to be clever and did a bit of googling and bravely bought some inserts on ebay - ended up with too big inserts. Tried again and yet again they were the right type but wrong size (this time too small). Not a total loss, since I can always make my own toolholders, but it would be nice to get the right inserts for the toolholders that I have, hence my question - can any of you kind gentlemen point to idiot-proof way of getting the right inserts? Similarly what's the best place to get torx insert screws? Thanks Chris

Managed to find this page to help me work out what is the size of my inserts: insert designationMaybe the link will help someone in similar position? My inserts were D shape and that wasn't a problem, the size was what I have messed up... It is now clear to me that I should have searched of 09 size inserts (too large were size 11 and too small were size 07). But looking at most of the stuff available on the interweb 09 seems to be an odd, or at least not a "preferred" size?

I had a similar problem in finding inserts for some tooling. I carried the holder around whenever I went to a show and eventually (at a vintage radio rally) found a seller who had loads of the ones I wanted. And at bargain prices. Plus he had the torx screws for them.
Not a quick method but it worked for me, and I now have enough spares to last me a long time.

Sounds like this is what I will have to do ... It would appear all the industrial ones are either 07 or 11 (or upwards). I was hoping that 09 might be some kind of "model engineering" size?
At least I know more now about ISO codes for inserts that I did when I started :-)

Talk to Jenny at JB Cutting Tools, she's a former Sandvik rep I think.

Thanks for that, I will double check, but their web page (like everybody else I've seen so far) only has DCMT in the two typical sizes 07 and 11. I heard that Sandvik were doing 09 in the past but it doesn't appear on their standard offering either.

Check out this web page... www.carbidedepot.com/formulas-insert-d.htm#clearanceI bought an ISCAR face mill from ebay and that was a nightmare to find inserts for. The reason in that case was because it had XCMT120408 inserts, where X means special! Once I'd found the right number for them, I searched in vain on ebay for them, the manufacturers price was ludicrous. I decided to set up an ebay search for them that alerted me when they came up and eventually I bought two boxes of them for a sensible price. Search for 'torx carbide insert screws' on ebay, there are loads of them.

Thanks for that striplar, that's exactly my difficulty. Yes, I've found torx screws on ebay - all of them from China and selling in packets of 10 :-)
The link BTW is the same one I mention in my original post - very useful indeed!

Sorry, I didn't see that link on your post. Take a look at this one... www.totoolsupplies.co.uk/uk2ecommerce/department/dcmt_positive_tool_holders/I think you may need to contact one of these suppliers and ask them if they can identify your holder. It's a real oddball from what I can see, there are no references to that part number at all. That doesn't surprise me if it turns out to be an ISCAR part, they are a pain for doing non standard things. I'd certainly take your holder along to Alexandra Palace if you're planning to attend there, you can try some inserts and ask the opinion of one of the suppliers there. Here's another chart I've found, I'm not sure if this is of any help. www.carbidedepot.com/formulas-insert-d.htm#clearance
