i thought i would share a few youtube clips which i recently found. there are quite a few others of the same event (in very cold weather and snow by the way!) www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEoVJcHe38Ywww.youtube.com/watch?v=0yCOKb6KZZAive always had a love of the London Underground network and it's history, and my first loco was painted in LT chocolaty maroon direct from Neasden Works. what amazed me about LT No 1 (similar to the IOW/LSWR O2 design) shown in the clips is the fantastic GWR type 'square' exhaust!! not bad for an old slide valve unsuperheated loco! im quite familiar with the IOW O2 design which had nothing like the same explosive exhaust sound. quite stirring i thought! my grandparents who lived in london used to tell me of steam 'ghost trains' running at night when i was a kid. and had i heard them during the night? i knew even at that very young age steam had disappeared. only many years later did i find out they werent pulling my leg and the LT were still running a fleet of ex-GWR 57XX pannier tanks. cheers, julian

Hi julian I'm a little upset and embarrassed that i never got around to seeing these loco's, more so as they actually went through my home town and on a line that I often use to get into London....very bad of me... btw the very first real steam loco that I ever saw was late one night on the viaduct between Rayners Lane and South Harrow on the Picadilly line.. they still used steam as a works train... this was iirc early 70's Pete

Nice find there, young man !!------ In the first one I think Sarah Siddons was giving a bit of a shove as she's clearly drawing current --judging by the flashes from the outer rail...From the other vidos alongside, have a look at the Secret Stations one..It takes you down into the closed Aldwych station which I very much remember using as a lad ( Especially those wooden-bodied lifts)......Incidentally I was at the SVR when 5764 (Ex-LT L95 ) arrived complete in its' LT livery and was immediately put into steam---whilst still on the low-loader !!)...And then there is 5775 ( Ex-LT L89) at the North York Moors Railway seen in the first make of "The Railway Children" film...ENJOY !!>>>>> putlocker.bz/watch-the-railway-children-online-free-putlocker.html ------------------

There is one more movie which is also good it called Night Train. In this movie two Passengers and the conductor discover that a person has passed away on their Night Train cabin and then the story continues. I am sure you will also like it ..here is the link movie25.ws/night-train-2009/

I can recall this steam loco, or one similar, standing at Moorgate Underground Station about 1947/8. Even in those days it was an unusual sight to see at an Underground Station. Well it was for me! As a young lad I had just joined the RMFVR which was based just up the road from Moorgate at Armoury House, City Road. Happy days!

hi julian, the HAC was and is very selective, your grandpa was amongst the favoured few indeed! am sure he had an 'interesting' war! not sure what the HAC role is now, they used to be artillery (in the late 40's armoured) & infantry. Believe they are now down to a Saluting Battery and a Reconnaissance unit, similar to a duty of SAS and believe also they have an active band & corps of drums as they do appear in the City of London Lord Mayor's Show. The RMFVR eventually moved in the 50's to White City, where they are now have no idea.
