Any freeware recommended to rid me of these blokody intrusions? Something doesn't ring true, you shouldn't have all that just from win 7. My guess is that you haven't installed an antivirus and you've got an infection. Search for avg free and install that. Make sure you definitely get the free version and do a custom installation without any toolbars or junk they want to install. Choose the basic install, it's all you'll ever need. I never pay for anti virus, it's unnecessary. Let it do the scan and then restart it when it wants to. You'll probably find lots of stuff on there. Roger

Agree with Roger. I would recommend installing AVG Free as well, be careful during the installation of AVG as they (of course) want you to purchased their software. Another useful piece of software you can run to remove AD programs etc is spybot search and destroy, it's free as well www.safer-networking.org/spybot2-own-mirror-2/ I would normally recommend having both software packages as a minimum. Working in IT, and spent my early years repairing home user computers, this is a common problem and your not alone. Regards, Dave

I would agree with both Roger and Dave i also use both AVG free and Spybot as normal protection. When a machine comes to me with a virus I tend to download a copy of Stinger from mcafee (it's a free app they do) it's the business at cleaning a machine once clean I will always delete stinger as it changes so often as to be out of date in a month so jus download a new version when I need it. You do have the basic firewall turned on in widows? When I get a minute I'll look up what you need to do (not near a PC at moment)

I also use a program called HijackThis which reports on everything that's running. I'm not suggesting that you start removing things with this, most of it will be genuine, but it's handy to get to know what things are on your computer and when something new appears. You can scan and save a log to compare with later. If you're really in trouble, you can send the log to their site and they will tell you if there's something you need to remove.
I also use Soluto which allows you to control what things start up straight away when you turn on the computer, and which things to prevent or just delay. It speeds up the boot process and makes you aware if it suddenly starts talking longer. There's a down counting timer so you know when it's completed booting, something that Windows keeps you guessing at!

HiJackThis is a very powerful tool indeed, but used incorrectly will destroy your Operating System and you'll be reaching for your restore disc's! I've never used Soluto, but it sounds like a user friendly interface for "msconfig". Don't want Silverfox to be put off, best for him just to use AVG Free and SpyBot for the time being. Between them should fix most common problems, and only use HiJackThis as a last resort!

Also, please don't just install another web browser (Google chrome etc) just because Internet Explorer has collected some spyware. Alway fix the underlying issue first!

Hello all---------- not wishing to "ruffle anyone's feathers" but I use my local Computer Shop to "Disinfect" should the occasion arise ( twice in the last 6 years )... He charges £20 and also adds the latest free AVG etc whilst at it..( There is the added benefit of trading protection should anything go wrong).......Since the last occasion I've changed to KASPERSKY which also includes "Protected Browser" during PayPal activity amongst other things........

No ruffling felt, it can be frustrating and troublesome trying to fix this yourself if you're not computer minded or simply just want it fixed. Personally I'd junk Internet Explorer in favour of Chrome once you've sorted it all out (if you're not using it already). Internet Explorer is typical Microsoft 'Bloatware', full of holes and an easy target for all those who hate Microsoft. Chrome is cleaner, quicker and easier to use in my opinion. Norton or Kapersky etc are all fine but they just prey on your worries like insurance companies do. AVG try to worry you that their Basic protection is missing so many features in their tick list that you'd be reckless to not buy the full version. It's all nonsense, the free one is all the protection you need. Nothing is going to protect you if you blindly open attachments on emails or get click happy on games or naughty web sites. And if you ever get stuck on a page where the only way out seems to be to click on what they want you to click on, just turn off the computer if you don't know how to close the process from the Task Manager. It's easier to avoid picking up an infection than clearing it up when you have it. Cheers, Roger

I,m surprised to find someone who can actually buy Windows 7. I,d been hacked, got it sorted out myself but thought that it was time to move into the 21st Century-and loaded W8. Complete distaster-dvd,s etc would run. Cost me £50 @pissyworl because I could get Windows 7 base unit or a programme.Actually,I,m playing with £80 tablet from Aldi. Thought that it would be rubbish. Not so. We live and learn ,cos I,be been out to buy one of the Arduino Uno things. Some geezer on MadModder is suggesting that this is the way to go.
Cheers Norman

Yes, I'd give Windows 8 a very wide berth, it's hopeless if you're used to Windows 7 because you can't find your way round something that ought to be familiar. Whether it will be any better when they bring back the boot straight to desktop is questionable. Windows 9 in already in advanced development and maybe they've actually listened to people this time. I wouldn't bank on it though. No, I'll be sticking with Windows 7 until it's obsolete and Microsoft have produced a replacement that everyone else has verified as working. What a farce. roger

I tried Win 7 and didnt like it, so have gone back to XP. I have seen win8 and am NOT going to try that out.
Perhaps Win 9 will be better, or maybe I'll go over to Linux. But, neither will be soon as I will stick with XP as long as it works, and that wont stop just because MS cease support for it.

Indeed it is, but thank heavens Microsoft don't have the stranglehold they used to have. Sure, the Desktop PC is far from dead, but much of what people used that for can be done in a Microsoft free zone. It's a pretty rubbish business model when they repeatedly hack off most of their customers though. That's why given the chance, most people stick up two fingers to Microsoft and go elsewhere. Sadly I can't do that, my key applications only run under Windows, and XP is too outdated to run them. Oh well, I'll have to grin and bear it. Roger

I'm sitting at an XP machine and originally thought that W7 is crap and W8 unmentionable in polite circles.
So I'm stumbling my way into cheap jack Google based tablets and overly expensive IPads.
I do a lot of business writing and have found that freebie office stuff is designed to be as good as Microsoft Office and if you think about it, one of these Adenoid things costs about the same as W7 and the machine thing is then free and the Office programme is £300 cheaper.
'Nuff to buy a wireless printer- out of me old age pension, eh? Thus spake a former Luddite!
