Ah yes, a drawing board... I remember those... My Dad made me one for a Birthday present with that sort of mechanism, I think it was an A3 size. It was really pleased with it and it came just in time for my GCSE technical drawing and metalwork exams. My stationary steam plant I designed for my exam was all done on it and the drawings came in really handy when I had to present something for my apprenticeship applications. So, you've got a living, working museum too... Excellent!

"Aye-aye, Skip"...(you have a distinct Pusser Sound, me hearty, but I suspect you are POST-SPLICERS!)!............Meanwhile, back in Swindon Machine Shop, the BIG lathe headstock gets a re-working so the main bed has been cleaned and re-aligned ( It's a Chester Craftsman, short bed ) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Alan,
So you're just cleaning the lathe down after finishing the Bear?
Congratulations,

Not far to go with the lathe then and we can see some Bear progress. That's a very handy cover, something I could use over the Smart Car at the moment although an umbrella might suffice. I really shouldn't be working of cars, I loathe it.

Glad to hear it Alan. It's very generous of you to be fixing other people's locomotives but you've got your own project that require your attention. How about a boiler for afternoon entertainment?

You could do worse than just talk to Transwave, Newton Tesla or Drives Direct. All will have a package to suit your machine.

The first thing to do is to sort out a motor. I presume you have a single phase one on there presently? Take a picture of the motor plate so you know what the rating is. Hopefully you'll find a motor which has the same footprint as yours and the same shaft size. You'll need a dual wound motor that will run on 220VAC. The motors usually give two pairs of values, one for the low voltage setup and the other for the high voltage one. Take a look at the diagram on page 3 of this document which neatly shows the way that most of these motors present themselves to be wired up. This diagram shows what they're trying to achieve with the two arrangements. They bring out both ends of the three windings to the terminal block so you can connect them in either arrangement. There are loads of inverters on the market and there's not much to choose between them. You just need to make sure that the one you choose is intended for a single phase input and that it has a high enough current rating. Other than that, there's not much to it.
