At one time I owned a 5in. gauge model 42XX in the guise of 4253. It had been built by a member of Cardiff Club who had taken measurements of the full-size version at Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway. The original had been there for about 30 years with little attention and out in all weathers with little protection. A Group called The 4253 Locomotive Company have acquired the original loco and have set about restoration with a vigour I have not seen before. They are having to remake parts like tanks and the bunker, using the originals only as patterns. This Link takes you to their website Gallery. They hope to complete the loco ready for the Kent & East Sussex Railway extension to Robertsbridge. The loco is now at Rolvenden. I sold the model about 2 years ago. Maybe you know where it is now. However, I post one picture of the loco and builder at Cardiff and one of myself on the Northampton track.

Hi Tony Thanks for sharing this, I wasn't aware of this particular rebuild...it's great to see so many rebuilds and new projects on the go....the mainline is going to have a lot of steam on it in years to come...that can only be good news...love the model...she looks a fine loco... Pete

I remember seeing this superb loco in 2009 at Swansea, just after I started in this hobby.

Yes, that model is fantastic I think I saw the 42 at Blaenavon before it was moved. They certainly had a lot up there, rusting away.

4253 is indeed in good hands - an enthusiastic and positive group. The 4709 people are in close touch as so many parts are used on both engines, especially the fourth axle and boxes which are unique to the 42xx and 47xx even though the wheelbases are different.

One of very few GWR engines that interest me...is there another 2-8-0 tank varient, or is there just the one?

Really just the one as the 52xx were a continuation with modifications such as curved drop frames. Thirty of the 52xx were rebuilt into 72xx 2-8-2T's with larger bunkers for longer distance freights. I always thought that they were much better proportioned than the 2-8-0T's. Ray.

[quote [/quote] ------------ Ha-ha !!!..So that's where all the Martin Evans 5" gauge SWINDON 2-8-0 wheel castings went to then LoL !!-----A chance viewing of a rare spoked wheel casting at the MEE got me talking to Mr "Colledge" --I paid a deposit ( you missed that one guys !!) and ---have just returned from a visit to Colledge Engineering at Codsal where I collected possibly the very LAST set of those wheel castings just mentioned--BUT he only had 7 left....So I need contacts for a local foundry who can do me 2 wheels using one of these as a pattern.................. I've already seen Noel Shelley of The Ringstead Foundry who CAN do it ..BUT he's based over on the East Coast so it's too expensive re}-- posting.....Any contacts at all ?

Alan, you could try Practical Scale for some 'proper' scale castings, from works drawings, including the different boss between the driving and coupled wheels as I understand the patterns for such are now done, I wanted a set for a future project of mine and Pete kindly agreed to organise them to add to their range. I understand many of the 'Swindon' wheels floating about are the same as 'Firefly' depending on the supplier chosen so 6 of your 7 may be of use to an individual building such a device!... Just a thought

Funny...thought it had bigger driving wheels... Def not the 2-8-2 tank, only the 2-8-0 that peaked the slightest of interest...I'm not a GWR fan

Def not the 2-8-2 tank, only the 2-8-0 that peaked the slightest of interest...I'm not a GWR fan -------- They all had driving wheels at 4ft 7.5ins and were generally speaking variations around the 28xx 2-8-0 rolling chassis ( Std. No.1 Boiler as fitted on the Halls)..but used the shorter No.4 boiler instead...................Those 28's were hauling 1,000 ton. LOOSE coupled coal trains from the Welsh valleys up to the big cities before WW1...

One of my customers found that somehow his system had taken upon itself to add me to the spam list. Macc models didn't answer an email either but they just didn't see it. You can't assume that someone's seen your email just because you've sent it.
