Dan, what method did you use for boring your axle holes in your boxes?
Looking good, and motoring ahead of me. I need to pull my finger out!

Great to see some good progress there Dan.
My Juliet is just frames and buffer beams. They sit together nice and square after several goes at the beams.
I started the axle boxes but found I was milling a wedge shape. I found some tips on Youtube and will be holding the work with a small diam bar against one jaw of the vice.
My better half has bought me a tall stool so I can park my rear and hopefully get some time in the workshop soon.
Pete.

That's looking really good Dan, starting to take shape and satisfying when you have something to put together. Regards Paul

Thanks for your comments chaps. Rob, I chucked them up in the 4 jaw then drilled and reamed 3/8". Seemed to work ok. You're building a scale model, not a rough and ready machine like mine will be Pete, how did you cut the slots in the beams? I used the trusty hacksaw and file which seems to be pretty good. Regards Dan

Hi all, Just a quick question - how precise do the wheel back to backs have to be? The given measurement is 3 9/32" (3.281") and I've got it at 3.3". Is that good enough or does it have to be exactly 3.281"? Regards Dan

There's no such thing as 'exactly' but to be honest, I can't see that being a problem since it's never going to have to negotiate a set of points. I might be a bit concerned if it was a 5" locomotive aimed at ground level running, I'd want it closer than that, but for your locomotive I'm sure it's fine.

Hi dc309 good progress on Juliet. I sleeved the pump down to 6 mm on my slip eccentric Juliet. She would still over fill the boiler during a lap of Bournemouth track with the bypass cracked open.

Thanks for that Roger. I was surprised I got it that "close" the first time round but it's nice to have something that rolls along the bench! I've decided that I'd like to do the Stephenson version instead of slip eccentric, so I've got the eccentric castings ready to do and I also got a few other bits whilst I was at it. I presume that when the eccentrics are done, they are a tight fit on the axle and then grub screwed? Thanks gingerneer! I'll probably reduce the size, but it'll probably whatever I think of at the time of machine haha Did you build your Juliet yourself? Regards Dan

Hi Dan
I've been sitting here trying to work out what the spacing would be for the checkrail on a 3 1/2 gauge turnout ( if such a thing exists) as i'm not aware of a standard profile for this, anyway having got an idea of what size would be required scaling from the GL5 profile I then reread what you had written and realised that I had done that for nothing...lol Having now reread your post I realised that your back to back measurement is greater than required, this isn't such an issue for if you do come across a club track with points in 3 1/2 you shouldn't have problems negotiating the checkrails. However this does beg another question... why is the gap bigger than required? if it's just a machining error taking a little too much off an assembled axle then all should be fine, but if the wheels are to the correct size and they have been fitted to the axle with too large a back to back gap then this is now out of gauge for the rails, ie the gauge has now changed from 3.500 to 3.519 which may or may not cause a problem, I suspect it will be ok as long as the flanges are deep enough, the wheels would just ride slightly higher than normal. Hope this all makes sense
Pete

Hi Pete, Thanks for your time! I really do doubt that I'll be running on a ground level track, so I won't have the issue of going through points etc. For a raised track, going round in circles, I should be ok (he says!). What you're saying makes sense though - I think I'd have to remake the axles if I wanted it dead on size, but I'll see what it does when I push it round a track first Regards Dan

I'm sure all will be well Dan, if it does prove a little problematic you could always set the axles up between centres and machine a little off the flange radius to bring it back to the correct gauge but my gut feeling is saying it will be fine...
Pete

Eccentrics should be driven by keys not grubscrews.

Thanks for that Michaelw, I've saved that for future reference. Does anybody on here have the Juliet words and music or know where I can obtain them?

Hi Dan,
I've got a pdf of most of the articles that I can email to you. Not sure where it came from - I think someone sent it me some time ago. I can soon scan the last few parts as well as I've got all the MEs.
Send me a pm with your email address if you want them.
John

Thanks for that Michaelw, I've saved that for future reference. Does anybody on here have the Juliet words and music or know where I can obtain them? I have the full set of MEs from the 1950s. I too am building Juliet - so far I haven't used the written info and as I have bought a commercial boiler and intend using as many pre-made parts as possible, I am not sure I will need them. Are you looking for the whole thing or certain bits of info? Pete.
