About 15 years ago I remember seeing a very highly detailed "Deltic" prototype model at a model engineering show somewhere (I wish I could remember which one!), it must have been 7 1/4", and the detail went down to the newspaper and sandwiches sat in the cab. That, coupled with a pair of those... I wonder if anyone is familiar with that model? I can't stress how detailed it was. Not the usual approximations you see for the diesels. Must admit though, I'd prefer a 12CSVT. If you could get that to sound right with the governor, I may never touch a steam engine again. ------------------------------------- I think it might have been at the NEC ??--------I remember those sandwiches more than the model itself, oddly enough !!

The Valenta had steel cylinder liners, made at a British Steel (later Corus)tube plant near Birmingham. They were Seamless Steel tube made by the rotary forge process in a Pilger Mill.

i remember seeing roy amesbury's diesel in his estate car boot partly finished in the late 1980's. must admit i'd rather have seen his award winning 5"g GWR PRESIDENT loco instead!
roy was an amazing guy. always came across as quite shy.

I remember it being big, much bigger than the shows I've been to in recent years, so the NEC certainly fits the bill. Which show would that have been? Do you know if they still put it on?

Yes, it's very much still on and Kinver usually put a stand on there----in fact I have a sneaky feeling that it was a "Guest" model on our stand..........It's too late at night now but I'll phone one of my Kinver contacts tomorrow --- he's always been involved with our showing at the NEC so he's bound to remember........UPDATE, It's this one !!>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> www.thewarleyshow.co.uk/

I did find that one, but thought that was more oriented towards model railways rather than the bigger gauges. I remember there were definitely machinery, DRO and tool sellers there, and I also remember one of the plastic/fibreglass body diesel makers, possibly Maxitrak or similar being there too.
Beyond that, and the Deltic, I don't recall much.

I remember it being bigger than Bristol, and the exterior of the building being white. I also believe it took longer to get there from Newport than Thornbury does. Damn my memory. It's not important, but it's niggling away at me now. It was before the age of the mobile phone camera in every pocket so I have no pictures to go by. I only had a film camera at the time and couldn't afford any film to go in it, so it always stayed at home!

I took two pictures of the model Deltic engine at Guildford Show in 2011.... The loco units were/are rated at 1650bhp and scavenge blown as next picture. The scavenge blower is situated on the left between the exhaust collector drum and the block.... And a look at the other side from the generator end.... Some of the marine units were rated at 4000BHP and therefore were blown much harder, scavenge blower replaced by real blower, as can be seen here.... I have to confess to being into this just a little bit, although less so with the marine units - not having access. I think marine units had a different type of rating over short periods - you do not want to be worried about over-stressing the engine slightly when a torpedo is approaching your rear end! Perhaps someone on the forum is more knowledgeable about this than I am.

Quite a lot of large engine have "sprint" ratings which means that an engine can be run at a higher power output than its continuous rating. This higher rating is normally only allowed for a short duration because the heat being created exceeds the cooling capacity of the cooling system.Because of the mass of the engine it take time for the major components to heat up to a temperature which would cause problems.This allows an engine to sprint for a period of say 10 or 15 minutes which must then be followed by a period of operation at a power setting below the continuous rating to allow the temperatures to return to normal. This period of operation at reduced power may last for a number of hours.
