I wonder if anyone can help i have just bought a rolling chassis for a 5"railmotor that looks very well built but i cannot work out which one it is,a 1 2 or 3 .It has a 43/4" smoke box but the cylinder bore is only 1",there are no drawings that came it.Are the drawings similar for all 3 models or is there a big difference between them.also is there a build series in ME or EIM and has anybody got a set of drawings or build book they would like to sell. Thanks Graham

Railmotors 1 & 2 were described concurrently by Don Young in 'Model Engineer'. No.1 was based on a Taff Vale Railway railmotor, but without the carriage portion of course. No.2 was a simplified freelance version.
Railmotor no.3 was described in Don's own magazine 'Locomotives Large & Small' and was basically no.2 re-styled to look like an LSWR S14 class.
No.1 had 1.1/4" dia cylinders and a 4.1/2" dia boiler, while no.2 had 1.1/16" dia cylinders and a 4" dia boiler.
If you send me a PM, I might be able to help further.

Chester.
Was that the one on Ebay the other day?
Seems to be a lot of chassis sold for railmotors. I got some castings but for a future build but they are good little engines.
My running Railmotor is the big boiler version and 1 1/16th cylinders. Still pulls me around. Just do not expect it to be like a Simplex but it is fun.

oh dear, superseven!
sacrilege! referring to the Taff Vale when it should be the rival Rhymney Railway! 2 built by Hudswell Clarke for the RR. incidentally don advised privately not to make the cylinder bore more than 1 1/32".
hi graham,
your's appears to be a No.2 Railmotor from the smokebox dia, the No.1 having a smokebox dia of 5 3/8", No. 2 being 4 3/4" dia. the valve gear is also different particularly the motion plate position and crankpin throw. i have all the original ME articles including most of the drawings (1968/69) but no longer have the original drawings as these were passed on to the new owner of mine many years ago. but if i can help i would be very pleased to assist.
cheers, julian

Chester.
Good one. See the price was reduced as I thought it a bit high. Monkeyhero here on the forum once had once for sale which looked good too but he will hold onto it. Smart decision.
At least I have one to copy ( my own) when I have a go building my own from scratch and I do not need a new tender. It will have a driver trolly and water supply.
Still reckon they are cute looking and a very good first loco built. How anyone ever builds a Tich first up I do not know. Going to give my one a thrashing this weekend, she loves it!
