I have just acquired a 5" gauge Hunslet rolling chassis (really nice so far apart from postie bending a buffer beam ) with drawings and have the build manual coming from Reeves. I understand this loco was covered in LLAS, does anybody know whether that coverage is useful, ie is it worth trying to source a set? Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy,
I've got a complete set of LLAS so I can probably help with any info you require. I would imagine though that the build manual from Reeves is probably just a reprint of the LLAS articles anyway?

Thanks John, I'll wait for the delivery from Reeves and then maybe we can compare? unless anybody else knows different? I know where there is a set of LLAS for sale but with what I've spent lately I need a very good reason to get them!
Cheers, Andy

There will be many pictures and other comments in LLAS which will not be in the construction manual (even if it is a direct copy of the mag articles)

Wasn't that a super publication. I am not a lover of the Welsh railways as Don was, but enjoyed his writings. I am using a lot of his A3 instructions for my B17, esp in the springs dept,as the hangers are the same,or as near as damnit. Talking of A3 the nurse whose was putting the top of my thumb back on today, her Grandad was a driver at KX. Oh and the Duchess looked nice through Fleet this morning

The 'build manual' from Reeves is just a photocopy of the magazine articles, £7.50 for 37 very poor copies with completely useless photos, I'm in the wrong business! I wonder where the copyright is?
I hope to join you, John, as the owner of a full set of LLAS any day now so that should be useful bedtime reading, meanwhile thank you for the offer.
(Unpacked a Juliet kit today - oh dear!)
Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy,
I think Reeves now own the copyright to all the Don Young designs and probably LLAS. I think Don sold all the castings etc to another company initially (HRM ?) but obviously they did not last very long.
I recently bought all the 2½" gauge design books from another well known supplier and they are also photocopies of the original articles with the same poor quality.
If you manage to get the set of LLAS you won't be disappointed as it was an excellent publication. Such a shame that Don didn't live to carry it on. Both he and the magazine were a great loss to the hobby.

When I picked up the "build manual" from reeves for the Don Young Class 2 I actually got copies of LLAS, (minus one issue) rather than photocopies so I was quite pleased with that, but it was a bit more expensive (I didn't know what I was ordering at the time!). Having found LLAS I thought it was a great publication.

If you're trying to make me jealous it's working Is Alice still without cab? I think they look much better that way, trouble is I've got a Juliet and Rob Roy to finish first, oh and a bigger lathe to find.

It's good to hear DON'S is still in demand, I met Don a few times at work, (at DONCASTER) works. He was A GREAT GUY, would talk trains all day, and , sometimes did if he wasn't caught, by the "snoops", (the foremen), he would be very proud to know his work lived on after all these years.

58 bound issues of LLAS arrived this morning - I see what you all mean now, what an excellent publication! Completely focused on locomotives and with quality writing, photos and plans. No work done at all today and I suspect I'll sulk 'cos I'm not going to Harrogate and read volume 2 on Friday. But I'll be driving on Saturday!

I got given 50-59 of LLAS last night at the club, so am almost the whole way to a complete set, will have to sit down and see which ones I still need and I have a feeling there maybe a few duplicates, which may end up on E-bay...
but nine isues should keep me going for a couple of nights reading...

Dear Andrew,
I am two boilers and a tank away from having 2 of these running, my problem has been that the drawings are a long way from the very simple full size engine. I have spent many happy hours at Launston Steam Railway, so now know almost everything there is about Hunslets, Don did a flight of fancy and made them far more complicated than needed, mostly so that you have to buy all the castings and spend more time cursing about curved stretchers in the workshop. Which we dont blame him for, but as with most loco designs in our new centuary need to be bought up to at least scale dimentions and in this case made much more easier to build.
Will have to post some photos of my pair.
David.
