Hi all, firstly I must confess to being a novice model engineer although Ive spent many years in model railways, anyway Ive purchased a part built 3 1/2 G Brit which came with a full set of drawings. Now then drawings Iam used to in my daytime roll as a fabrication shop foreman, but these appear to be lacking in certain respects...ie certain dimensions !. first off is the smokebox saddle, my drawings do not give a height above the frames for the smoke box !, same for the firebox above the frame extensions unless off course you scale directly from said drawing.......something Ive always been told never to do !!!!. And finally ( for the moment !!)the cab structure appears to be screwed to the back of the base of the firebox !. any help or advice would be most gratefully received ! Cheers Tony.

Hi Tony,
is it the LBSC version as described in Model Engineer back in 1951? If it is, I've got the relevant volumes so I could see if there's any more info in those,
John
I've just looked up the ME articles and it sounds as though you probably have got the LBSC version.
Smokebox saddle - the height is adjusted on fitting of the boiler to the chassis so that the boiler centre line is horizontal. This is done by sitting the boiler throatplate on the rear frame stay and then adjusting the smokebox/ saddle height until the top of the barrel is 1/4" lower at the smokebox end than the firebox end.
Yes, the cab is mounted onto the backhead using long brackets. Apparently this is how it was done on the full size loco.
If you like, I can scan you the relevent bits of the articles and email them to you.

Hi John, thanks , yes it is . The drawings seem pretty old and are by Percival marshall of london....all 22 pages of them !. Another question !...the water pump worked by the eccentric on the driven axle, is this commercially available and if so from where?. this is quite a departure from my usual interests....the GCR and the products of John Robinson. Cheers Tony.

Hi Tony,
see my modified post above. The axle pump is available as a casting. Both Reeves and Blackgates still supply castings for Britannia.
I've got a part built chassis myself lurking under the bench waiting my attention some time in the future!

Tony I have recently joined the group and I notice you interest in the GCR. I am nearing completion of 5" Jersey Lilly, and, looking forward a few months I am starting to think about paintwork etc. Do you have any information, photos or suggestions as to where I could look to get help on colours, lining, what parts may be polished brass etc. Don Youngs drawings only give sparse info on such things. There's one for GCR 4-4-2 No. 194 Class 8B of 1903. See www.phoenix-paints.co.uk Best of luck, Peter W.
