Hi building an engine in 5" g is certainly not a just one winter project , it will take much longer time . There is no reason why you do not build from scratch ( not criticizing the other method ). This way the cost is less and spread over a longer time ,surely it will take longer but one can enjoy every step of the project . Just a thought .

Dear Dogioio,
Many years ago when we had an empire and if you hit your thumb at work!!!! could swear in front of people whichever colour they were. Over in Wolverhampton they were building very sweet little tank engines. The 517 class, almost Great Western, narrow gauge and painted a slightly bluer green than Swindon. later Mr C.B.Collet took the design and updated it into the 1400 tank. I have a full set of Didcot drawings, but they are quite hard to follow. I also have several works drawings. I also pass Buckfastleigh twice a day on my way to work where they have one in bits. I am in the process of drawing out the 517 from a wonderful works drawing of 1890, if you look in Images in the Prarie tank section, parts from sheet 7. This shows most of the parts for the frames, laid out on the floor of what is now our conservatory. More details are under Scale model locomotive designs, in the Buy,sell exchange, section of this our wonderful site. I have now done the cylinder drawings, and they use cast iron bar of 2" square section, which saves quite a bit of money over normal castings. Wheels castings from Didcot/Metro. If you are tempted by my design, or in reality a redraw to 1 1/16" to the foot scale, I would be very happy to work with you in producing what is a lovely engine.
David.
