Adjusting gibs on a lathe

After trying to cut off a piece of steel I found that there was more play on my lathe than I found admissible. So I tought of adjusting this using the gibs. I just turn the bolts till I found eveything rathern snug without being too hard to move and blocked it at that setting. But now I wonder...

What is the correct procedure to adjust those things?

just turn the bolts till you find everything rather snug without being too hard to move and blocked it at that setting. Ideally it should feel silky smooth when moved, my old lathe could never be set like that as two turns of the hand wheel moved the saddle 2 1/2 feet but the principle is the same
