Does anybody have details of setting up the Baker valve gear on a Juliet 2? or any Baker valve gear for that matter, Stephenson's I think I understand but this one It was covered from vol 106 (1952) in ME but I don't go back that far. Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy,
I can send you scans of the relevant articles if you like. I also have some scans of a series of articles by K N Harris on Baker valve gear that I did for another member. I think Baker is set up the same as Walschaert's i.e. it's just a matter of setting the return crank and then checking the length of the eccentric rod.

Sorted! thanks baggo, John you have mail.
As a complete aside my parcel included the three volumes of ME covering the original Juliet build as bought from Tee publishing. One of the sets had a duplicate issue and one missing so I rang them up and enquired as to purchasing missing issue. Next day said issue arrives in mail - no charge! Service above and beyond so unusual nowadays, I thought it deserved mentioning.

A few years ago I built a Garratt in 5" gauge ( free lance ) using two sets 3.5" gauge cylinders and valve gear of Juliet 2 with baker valve gear .See my site . I purchased plans for cylinders and valve gear ,I couldn't then and can't now understand how they work . I bought a small booklet on baker valve gear but at the end of reading I was not any wiser .The only thing I concluded was that they are similar to Walschart . I made all parts to the plan ,assembled them according to the drawing and timed the engines as Walschart and they work fine and the engine sound fine .I don't know how I can help but if I can it will be a pleasure .

Thanks John, I've got Charlie Dockstraders program as well, should have thought of it! You still can't beat the 'adjust the woggle sprocket till the valve just opens' type of instructions though, especially when you're as green as me.
Cheers, Andy

Thanks everybody, especially baggo for mailing LBSC's words of wisdom - now to digest. That is one pretty Garratt Shawki, I have a real soft spot for 'double' locos, in fact I built a Garratt over 35 years ago, but I suppose 2 Lilliput 0-4-0's and an Airfix Pug running on OO9 don't really count - didn't half pull though! Now if I could just work out how one would fire a double Fairlie in 5" gauge Cheers, Andy

A fellow club memeber is building a 5" single Failie. He was in conversation with a guy a few years ago who'd built a double Fairley. If I recall correctly it was in 3.5" gauge. He fired it at the station!
