OK; you've got the motion running on air and everything is looking good, you'd like to try it on steam but the boiler build has yet to be started and one quote from a professional builder was a 22 month lead time. So what do you do? Get some steam from one of your mates locos and give it a try.
Dave had done this before with his single Fairlie and another club members loco, but there were few pictures and no video. He still had the setup just on hand so I just needed to make a few temporary mods to my Dart to try it out.
Yes; to save you asking the Dart was pulling the Fairlie most of the way round. A little bit of a push was applied going up the hill, but the Dart is still very new and needs running in.
As you can imagine I'm very happy with the result.....

What a great idea, it seems to be a very capable locomotive, especially considering there was hardly any weight on the driving wheels.

What a great idea, it seems to be a very capable locomotive, especially considering there was hardly any weight on the driving wheels. Thanks everybody; it surprised me as well when it first pulled away the driver confirmed he was just powering the Dart. The Fairlie was back a notch and the regulator closed, although he may have given it a nudge to get things moving. Before the original boiler was scrapped I had weight it at 22kg, Blackgates tell me the boiler kit weighs 33kg. However, I just discovered that the original boiler may have been in 3mm copper as the AMBSC code only allows 100psi and Martin Evans designed for 125psi with 4mm copper. The boiler guys tell me 3mm is OK up to 7” diameter and 100psi, it’s the stays that matter. Anyway on the weight; to get close to the full weight those blocks are 9kg and I had 5 of them on board so 45kg of ballast. Later on in the run it started to rain, hence the wheel spin. Pete
