A little update from the Sunshine coast this morning. I had all of last week off work to spend in the workshop and clear up some long overdue orders. This week I have been carrying on with the next orders in the queue and a little bit on the 9f the last few evenings. Here is a selection of the work that went on.
This is a batch of 5" Blower Valves, not the simplest things to do as the castings have small passages and everything is just small.

I was looking for the best way to do the square hole in the handle and came across Steve's thread HERE on how he did it using the back of a tap but I couldn't find any taps with a 50thou square but I use the same method of making a small block held in the chuck to support the casting boss and pressed through a small diamond needle file.

Completing these meant I could finish this order heading out to two nice gents in Switzerland and also our good man Mike of Barlow works for his lovely Britannia. This is the order going overseas

Next up was a few more injector valves, these are dead easy now I have all the parts in stock its a case of machining the castings, assemble and test on the test rig which last week proved to be an extremely valuable tool to have set up in the workshop. It was as simple as fit the valve, light the match, walk away and make a cup of tea (and play with the puppy) and by the time I'm back pressure.

Although I haven't supplied these yet they are something I've been playing around with and now got a new version on order but here you can see the universal joints that are seen all over the BR Std locos outside the cab but rarely seen on models!

Last job I did was to finish off the 7 1/4" Reverser gearboxes. These have taken some time to do as they are so involved I pick them up and put them down a lot but now they are all painted thats to my man John up north and ready to go out to some very excited customers.

Right, now that's all there I can show you what I've done on the 9f. Now the loco is here and I'm getting back into working in the workshop my enthusiasm to work on its sky high and I'm determined to finish it ready for next season as it is our 70th Anniversary at Beech Hurst and I want it running for the celebrations next to one of grandads locos (hopefully). A 70 loco cavalcade has been mentioned.......
Last job on the 9f was fitting the cab ready for Ally Pally so its now time to work on the model and get the spectacle plate cut which defines other positions.

First up was the duplex valve, a friend made the bracket for me when he was doing his own so it was a case of fitting it with relation to the cab windows and reference photos.

Going to be tight in there.

Next job I had put off until I knew the window positions was the washout plugs, 9 either side I was 1 short in stock, damn! Lucky the foundry had a delivery in the post and 200 arrived the next day. I forgot to get a photo of the otherside.

The last two nights have seen me working on the water valves, I love these castings and the details as they just look awesome on show under the cab. They are made with a PTFE block for 90deg open/close. To drive the PTFE I used Rogers trick of a hex drive machined onto the spindle and to make the pocket in top of the PTFE I cut a round pocket the same Dia. as the AF of the hex and pushed it in using the tailstock against the closed jaws, only mistake I made on the first was to not support the cross hole with a drill blank and it got squashed slightly.

The square is an odd size so I've done another Roger - Part on a stick, the manual way!

There is an O-ring under the flange to seal this and then one under the gland nut to seal the shaft so we shouldn't draw any air in.

And one fitted to the loco. When I take the cab off next I'll fit the second on the inside.

Last thing I've been working on is the design for the 5" gearbox which is being dropped off at the foundry any day now by Mike, very excited to get this in and on the loco!

When you sit here and write about all the things you done it make you realised how much more there is compared to when you are sat there but I'm please to have done some jobs on it again. Back to brake valves this afternoon, 2 LMS to finish and 1 G&C Steam Brake over the next few days.
Lastly for all your guys with 3D printers something light hearted...
