I’m thinking about fitting a steam chest pressure gauge to a couple of my engines and wonder if anyone else has retro fitted one. My idea is to ‘T’ off the snifter pipe, has anyone else done this or can anyone think of any reason why this wouldn’t work?
Thanks,
Jason

hi jason,
ive done it quite a few times and know others who have too. you need quite a sensitive good quality miniature gauge due to the pressure fluctuations, and it also needs to be be fitted to a pipe off the steam chest, not the snifting valve. on a outside 2 cylinder loco you wont get anything like the correct steam chest pressure other than from the steam chest itself. best results are also if the pipe is as short as possible.
cheers, julian

I wonder what would happen if you connected it to the oil supply line? maybe the oil would damp out the reading so much that it wouldn't really work. However, I think it could read perfectly accurately and could be a very simple place to tap into.
