I'm after some help please regarding the axleboxes on my BR1A tender for my Britannia. I want to improve the look of the axleboxes to make them look more realistic. The real thing as shown below has a pad above the axlebox that appears to be sliding on the front face of the horn cheek wear pads. Is this to distribute the force from the springs more evenly across the top of axlebox? Has anyone got any pictures that they can share? I have had some new horncheeks made to go with very detailed Timken covers, so this 'pad' is the last bit I want to try and include. Many thanks, Paul

hi Paul....you are correct in your assumption that it's to do with the spring, in fact it's called the 'spring plate'...my build has a similar design..

Pete

Hi Pete, Many thanks for the info. Do you have any pictures that you can share? Paul These may help drawing for Doncaster's tender spring plates which look very similar in design to your picture of Britannia's and a picture from early on in my own build.. there's more details on these on page two of my build thread.... Regards Pete

Doug Hewson described one type of BR standard tender in excellent detail in his Class 4 serial in EIM from June 2009 onwards . Not actually a Brittannia tender but very similar components including axleboxes .
Regret I don't have the specific article about the axleboxes in my collection .
