Hi. Can anyone offer any advice on grinding slitting saws, I do have a cutter grinder ;D, it's one of those Vertex type things but of Chinese manufacture . Bit of advice, basically if anyone is thinking of buying one just stick to their Chinese food and forget the machine tools, it took alto of messing about to get it usable but I suppose it was cheap. Anyway to the point, has anyone out there got a drawing for a fixture for grinding slitting saws. I have successfully reground the end of slot drills and end mills, but for the life of me cannot figure out how one grinds the flutes, I have the gadget to do it, but am having great difficulty in deciphering the poor instructions, so any advice on this would be great. I have also managed to bodge 6 facet grinding for drills which is great. So I am now making Derck Browns (was serialized in ME) gadget for doing the job properly, it does require a bit of re-engineering to get it to fit, as it was designed for the quorn. Looking forward to some guidance, thanks. Martyn.

There was a description of a slitting saw sharpening attachment for the Quorn - IIRC in MEW Issue 45, 1997 by Mr Amos - which, essentially, uses the face of one tooth against a spring-loaded stop to align the tooth being ground (say 90 degrees away around the saw). The saw is mounted horizontally, and the tooth to be ground is presented to the edge of a suitably dressed cup-wheel. The flat front of the wheel grinds the tooth face whilst the angled side just touches the back of the previous tooth. On the Quorn, the work-head can be swung into and away from the grinding wheel whose axis is parallel to the bed-bars. The tooth is indexed to the next space and "ditto-repeato"
Grinding the flutes on an end-mill/slot drill is easier done than said.
Why not buy, beg, borrow or otherwise obtain the Quorn book and read up how. Then adapt the technique for your Vertex. You'd probably have to use a plain wheel as, IIRC, the Vertex wheel can't be rotated as can the Quorn to present the face of a cup-wheel to the work.

Hi Tel. It would be much appreciated if you did have a copy of the drawing I could get hold of, thanks for the reply. Martyn.
