Just a tip for when reusing nuts & bolts . To get the threads as clean as possible. I use old toothbrushes to clean the threads before attemting to reuse.

Another good use for them is for getting dried Brasso out of awkward places like nameplates!

I use them for cleaning the chuck thread and lathe nose before re-fitting. Also the chuck jaws/slots.

They also work quite well for tooth cleaning Yes, but before, not after, you've used them for all the other things suggested here.

Didn't soldiers on jankers use them to sweep the parade ground?

Depends on how worn the toothbrush is after its initial use. If the bristles are bent over, they work well as T-slot cleaners on the milling machine.

Dave,
for cleaing tee slots I have a piece of 3mm flat bar with one end cut to the profile of the tee slot. Just pop it in the slot and slide it to the end pushing the swarf out in front of it.

Dave, for cleaing tee slots I have a piece of 3mm flat bar with one end cut to the profile of the tee slot. Just pop it in the slot and slide it to the end pushing the swarf out in front of it. Tried similar, but to get the slots completely clean, the pusher would need to be an exact fit. The old toothbrush gets all the gunge out, maybe not in one go, but with a bit of extra twiddling does a pretty good job. Dave The Emerald Isle

I use them both, the pusher to get the bulk out, brush to get the last little bits out. To be honest its an old paint brush rather than a tooth brush, seems to get into the hidden corners of the slot better.

Compressed air works very well for tee slots, bad for bare feet though!

I was always told not to use compressed air for cleaning down. Possibility of blowing swarf into things rather than off things, and certainly the possibility of blowing something into an eye.

Not quite on topic but related :
One of our fully skilled production millers had made over the years a complete set of drop in/on covers and plugs for all the swarf collecting areas of his machine including the T slots .
