Is there a mini revival of 3.5" going on?
I really hope so.
Pete.

Is there a mini revival of 3.5" going on? I really hope so. Pete. It happened with 2.5" so hopefully it will with 3.5". A lot of people find anything bigger too expensive and too awkward to move about, especially as they get older! Even I picked up a part built Rob Roy last year

Is there a mini revival of 3.5" going on? I really hope so. Pete. I don't think that 3.1/2" ever really went away. I would say that there are plenty of good designs out there in 3.1/2" that caters for most tastes. Was looking at Don Youngs 4F just yesterday. With escalating copper prices, 3.5" gauge is by far cheaper way to build locomotives thatll put you around a track. The narrow gauge 3.1/2", and some of the larger standard gauge locos are big enough to earn their keep pulling passengers too.

One of the locos I am playing with at moment, Hunslet "Jack" would be a great 3 1/2" loco. It would scale to approx 670mm L x 266mm W x 427mm H

Hello everyone----- Oh dear, a slight "error" has crept into the water bowser dimentions as a result of which I'm having to be somewhat "Creative" and alter the design a little......The Before & After photos tell the sorry tale !!........ The two top beams were somehow made overlength and thus needed shortening......However, as the holes for the tie bars were already drilled I had to saw off the excess just inboard of them.....and re-drill. This resulted in the tie bars needing a slight curve put on in order to align with the new holes....( The tank being a tad over width doesn't help either !! )..........As you can see the first one doesn't look too bad.....all I have to do now is make the other 3 the same...( Wish me luck !! )...

Quite!! I am beginning to get quite a collection of offset bending former's. The last pair were for Jessie and the Guard irons. The biggest and some heat is also needed for rear Big Prairie Frame joggles. Got the press as well now.
Today it was Watch THE WEATHER RADAR ON LINE... And go shopping in Lidl THEN B & Q FOR SOME WORKSHOP PARTS. Like rolls of roof. Then it RAINED.
Ordered a skip. Paid 2 bills. South West Water and Plymouth Council as they had eventually got round to sending me a letter. Then checked for when I can get out of British Gas Homecare!
You tube for a rest. Well walks along old railway lines. I did far too much the previous day as it was nice.
David and Lily.

I'm getting utterly driven to distraction by the amount of companies that make daft errors with orders! It drives me insane how many orders I get with mistakes, get lost, poor quality of items, it's astonishing and really very frustrating. At this rate I'm going to start logging it all.

It may be worth bearing in mind that the last six months have seen some ME suppliers deluged with orders from people spending extra time in their workshops - and at the same time, if they employ staff, they have had to maintain social distancing which must make "normal" operations very abnormal.
I have had a few orders go slightly askew, but I would single out for the Highly Commended award, M-Machine Metals, who have made the odd error in an order but have put it right very quickly and told me to keep bits that had been supplied wrongly "as they are sure to come in useful one day". Also, Tracy Tools, GLR Kennions, and EKP Supplies, whose service during the last months has been exemplary. I also endorse Jem's praise of Simply Bearings on another thread today.
I agree mistakes can be inordinately frustrating, and certainly some suppliers are better than others, but I think we are, on the whole, extremely well served by the Trade.

don't forget that the Postal and Courier companies are just as badly effected as the rest so it's a big "Thank You" to them as well I'd say for doing the best they can in very difficult situations...

here's a bit more on the Water Bowser project........To-day I've been doing some decorating with dummy rivets..........Here I'm using a centre drill in the mini -mill to re-align a poorly-placed centre-pop before drilling........The photo shows just the one end but I've been working on the two together at the same time ---------->

things are starting to take shape at last.........Again, this is a "dry run" mainly to check dimentions and it's thrown up a couple of issues....mostly to do with alignment, nothing that can't be rectified.... Note that the ends of the two tie-bars have yet to be threaded, an angular thrust adaptors made and the two vertical posts secured to the platework... The opposite end is a mirror image but without the water tap and pipework...... As this vehicle will be coupled to my driving truck I'll be using a straight bar coupler to minimise fore and aft movement on the flexible water pipe join.... I can't wait to finish paint and get the decals on !

Well that little exercise proved worth while-------It turns out that the drum hadn't been sitting as square as it could have done.........when adjusted using a spirit level the nett result was that the verticals need reducing by 1/16"....... and here's where that use of soft solder pays dividends !!......I'll remove the hinges, reduce both verticals on the milling machine and then replace...When all checks out it'll be rivets and final paint----then attach the hinges to the floor....... That ball-shaped item is my "Wipe" for clearing excess solder from the working surface.......It's cotton, rolled in a ball and secured with a zip-tie then rubbed generously with paste flux.....As you can see it works a treat !!

It's not so much what I've done as what I've lost. I woke this morning to the news that a friend had lost his life attempting a British speed record. RIP Zef

An early passing is always sad, but if you can take anything from this at least they were doing something they loved.

Very sad news...
Sat indoors with YouTube set to something interesting. For both of us. Yesterday was the productive one with many bits added to the Workshop Extension. Scarf jointing the central beam makes it look impressive.
Yes our suppliers have been great G.L.R. superb. Only let down by the drawings which in places are just very difficult to follow. Another reason that Twin Sisters have one of the lowest build numbers next to Asia. You know they are bad when Les Saxby Asia's designer, when asked, tells "Do another model Asia is full of problems!!!" Quote from a new friend who met him. Been on the Drawing Board for several months and an easy build version is imminent. Europa 54. Reeves interfered and wanted more castings to sell with it.
L.M.S. 2F Dock Tank. Is coming on very well with a mass of measurements and a visit to a website with Dock Tanks from all angles. Again the same tail of at the time of Designing all 10 of them could be seen and details noted!!!! Speedy and LBSC not setting eyes upon one the other side of London. Also springs to mind. Then we would not have Rogers superb MASTERPIECE to follow.
David and Lily.
