My new scales gave my metabolic age as 67, I'm 61 this Saturday...If you think the weight given by scales is bad, try the NHS heart age app... mine told me I have a heart age of 96... Pete

Spent the afternoon with a pad and my new cheap aldi hand held bandsaw working out how to convert to bench bandsaw. Getting the welder tomorrow and a days fabrication.

What's a hand-held bandsaw? Picture please.

Gents seem to have wasted several sheets of paper drawing something that is already on youtube, should have known someone would have beaten me to it. Will make it quickly detachable so it can be used freehand if needed.

Had wonderful success today. Been trying to make a slitting saw arbour, mucked up the first in the three jaw so tried again. The second looked great but wobbled in the mill when I started it going. Analysed the problem and the various issues. Assessed from a number of vantage points and removed it from the mill. Assessed it some more and came to a true engineering solution. Took the blade out of it and set it aside. Said WTF and dumped it in the bin and ordered a new one from Warco for £20.00. Boy, am I becoming an engineer!!! Cheers David

Not an engineer yet David. A true engineer would think about it overnight, take it out of the bin and put it on his scarp pile, never to be used again.

As per Arkwright....HOW MUCH!!
Took the drawings for my spring buckle's, 8 required, Spring hangers, 16 required.....both from 16 mm plate, (over thick but not by a lot), plus Spring links, 16 required but had a plan & had 2 together to aid machining from 8 mm plate on Friday last. I got the price back...….had to dive into the soothing ale stores to get over the shock!! In excess of $700...that's not going to happen!!
All is not quite lost, these guys are about 5 mins away...time to take SWMBO & the hound out for a day trip & head off to the guys a bit further away & see what there charge is! no mad rush just thought I'd get some bit done so they will be ready when needed......current rate still a way off!
Cheers Kerrin

This from Aldi was a good buy, I am retiring my full size draper bandsaw so this will be doing the heavy lifting from now on.

Foolishly accepted an offer on the house so that looks like all workshop activity is off the cards for months whilst I pack up, move and set things back up again. The hunt for the new house has thrown up one option with fantastic workshop potential, I just have to convince someone else that the house bit is acceptable...

Funnily enough we have been talking of moving.
It's not your average move I have in mind though. I would like to downsize where we are and buy another property in Spain. I suffer more and more each year with cold weather aches and pains. The chance to just disappear for a month or two is calling me very strongly. I think I would try and make it permanent at some point.
The Boss is happy(ish) in principle too.
Pete.

Don't buy a property in Spain, or anywhere else abroad before you know that you like that place. I have lived here in Mallorca for the last 55 years, and seen so many people who have come out here fallen in love with the place bought a property lived in it for 6 months or a bit more and then found that actually it didn't suit one or both of them, and had to sell and go back home. by all means go abroad, rent a property live in it for at least 6 months, learn a bit of the language find your feet, and if all goes well you will be in a better position to see the lie of the land, buy the property that really suits you at its real price, not the glossy advert price.
best wishes
Jem

I couldn’t agree more Jem. Been going back and forth to Spain for the last 17years, 1/3 Spain 2/3 Uk. Always recommend to rent for at least a month at two different times of the year, summer & winter. Get to know the area, people and local amenities. It can be great if you do your homework.

How many people emigrate to a 'better life' lock, stock and barrel only to find out that one or more members of the family are bitterly unhappy and thereby are faced with a huge dilemma? All for the sake of a few months trail period. A contemporary of mine has done this twice! First occasion to Australia it was he who was at odds, the second time in NZ it was his missus. Guy

Some years ago my stepson tried living in Spain. One Xmas the expat community decided to have a good old English Xmas lunch and as we were visiting family, we went to it. Sitting around talking with them I asked what exactly is the joy of living in Spain? I expected to learn about warmth, sea, beauty, culture, fine wines and all that. They said, "we do not have to pay a TV license here!" For us that settled it, never!!! David

Unless I'm misreading this I think Pete is fully intending to do a trial period, by using it as a second home as a while.
If you need a one-legged gardener out there give me a shout, I don't know much about gardening but I reckon I could learn fast!
