What a bleeding hobby we have. Got a lovely 1/8th slot mill drill thing this morning and had done about five careful passes to get a nice liitle slot, I guess and bing off went the important bit. So tried my slitting saw, it should do the same job even though it is exactly 5/8th on the shank and should fit into the milling machine collet, it simply spin around like a weather vane. The old one sat in the drill chuck but I do not like changing the thing every five minutes so thought I would be smart and use the milling holder. I think I now have to make threads on the top bit to fit it into the holder. More delay and more setting up the lathe for 20 tpi, uurrggg. Roger, don't mention it! Strong whisky tonight! David

David I have to cut some 3mm wide 1.5mm deep slots in 8mm silver steel rod and some 5mm wide 2.5mm deep slots in 20mm steel rod. These are for keys to locate sprockets on my axles and intermediate shafts. I have already broached the keyways in the 8 sprockets

I also have a small keyless drill chuck with a 1/2" shank that goes into the ER32 collet chuck. Chris D

Hello glynmar, Re}--- 8 wheel tender... As far as I know there were only 2 locos that had an 8-wheel tender with the axleboxes on the inside}---- a) The GWR 4-6-2 The Great Bear b) The LSWR 4-4-0 T9 and of these the Bear's were arranged on two fore-shortened loco bogies, whilst the T9's were 4 separate axles..... If you let me know your tender wheel diameter ( on the tread please ) and the wheel pitch within the bogie then I can compare that with mine......My guess is it won't be that far off in difference........The bogies are a shortened version of the GWR standard de-glehn loco bogie....Malcolm High has already produced the bogie top-plate and compensating beams for me so he will have the cutting template dimentions on file.... Yes, mine also works out at over 6ft long !!.......and like you I also had produced a special bench only for it to be gobbled up by No.111. Stevand123 added After Great Bear's conversion to a Castle three different Churchward "County" 4-4-0's were for a time connected to the eight wheel tender, 3802, 3804 and 3816.
Thanks for your help Stevand. I can't now remember what I originally posted but the 8 wheel tender I am looking to complete is an Indian Railways Pacific XB based I think on an A3 that has outside axle boxes on 2 Bogies. When I figure out how to load a couple of pictures I will post to show what I mean. Having had a look at the A3 tender wheel sizes on some drawings kindly sent to me buy Chris Dore the ones I bought secondhand are about 3/4" smaller diameter at 4" at the rear when the A3 is 4 3/4". Bearing in mind the bogie setup on the XB I hope to be able to adapt to the wheels I have. I guess what I am looking for is an additional drawing for an 8 wheel tender that uses a bogie set up with outside axle boxes. Hopefully when I get the pictures loaded for the XB Loco it will make more sense.
GlynLink to Pictures I hope work u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZROAfXZW6iOFyMWxIpCb4Q8SMWqzVYe1e47u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZqOAfXZXULHg0EV9nFEdbIg05SdbLzBJbsy

Chris, an update. I do have a small ER collet holder, 22 size I think, for small bits and I bought it before I really know what it was. Cutwel in Dewsbury were very helpful. And when a certain nameless person took me to get my lathe it came with a collect holder on a backplate and about 30 collets. Again I really did not know of the signficance of their importance (just something other people used) but I was still annoyed that I could not screw cut on this bleeding lathe. Struggled all day and finally after a conversation with nameless had a look on the web to answer my questions. Lo and behold out popped a 50 page instruction manual on the SC4 from Travers and Co in Flushing New York. Of course it became obvious that the lever that I was told never to touch as it ran the milling attachmenet, was in fact the half nuts on the bit that drives the screwing feature so all is well now. Very helpful Travers and Co of Flushing were and I have told them so. They also sell the components for the SC4, what if they had a leadscrew or two and some handles in english and other bits and bobs, I could have a proper SC4! What a contempation. We plan to be in NY at the end of August and look where Flushing is, close to Queens, how juicy! Yes, will get a larger collet holder but I had to find out how it worked. All a part of learning and as I am not an engineer, merely a student of enginering, I must be given space to learn!!! After all you do not want to damage my mental health, what ever the F that is. Did not have that around for the first 60 years of my life, must be something you catch from fresh air! Cheers David PS Thanks nameless for ponting me in the right direction!!!

I finally got around to fixing up a sensible pumped coolant feed arrangement using an old spare magnetic thingy. It looks Heath Robinson but it works! On reflection, I should get a longer pipe and fix the valve to the back wall, but what the hell... While I was at it I cleared out the swarf tray - long long time since the last time- and also sprayed the cushionfloor with some thinners and gave it a wipe! It's a much nicer place now. Nameless...

Why not put the magnetic bit on the headstock or isnt it ferrous? Looks like you have enough pipe to reach and it would send Mr Robinson on his way. Its amazing what a little clean up does to the look and comfort of a place! I cant stand crunch swarf under my feet.

More Spring Cleaning and a Sort Out!I tore down the charts and the mirror behind the lathe: they were just like my old Henry Hoover, just gathering dust... There's a new big shelf up top where the number plates used to be, and all my seldom used kit is now up there, gathering dust... The mag strip was a nice idea, but the one I had wasn't strong enough to hold some of the QC tools, they kept falling off, so I made a new diddy shelf for them. My Imperial reamer set also sits on the new shelf, the Metric ones are still hidden in the drawer! The mag strip is on the wall where I can hold and see all my form tools rather than empty the tin every time. Trouble is, I don't seem to have made much extra space...!

I did a few little jobs today on the William, engraved the reverser indicator plate with lines to mark central and notched up positions. Also adjusted the reverser linkage to get more balanced action fore and aft. Realised that something as simple as a broken gauge glass could really ruin my day so as they are cheap I bought a couple from clevedon steam (they supply them ready cut to size for no additional cost). Also drilled and tapped some holes on the smokebox that were missing threaded holes; I forgot that they were never fitted and only noticed when checking the smokebox sealing yesterday.

I will update my loco thread when I get time. However I achieved a significant milestone today. SHE RUNS ON AIR. This was totally unexpected, I having put all the valve gear gear back together and set the timing she was very stiff. Even the drill was not that happy. anyway I made up all the necessary adaptors to hook up to the compressor and about an hour ago hooked it up. I set the pressure to 80 psi and put the reverser at about 3/4 of its travel to full gear, then cracked the valve. Blow me she started up. a bit lumpy and is bouncing around a bit as she is stiff buts she runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I then quit while I was ahead and opened a bottle of red to drink while I write this. Tomorrow I will start to run her in properly and check things over. But at least all the seals seem to work. Dave
First (well second) run on air.

Final check on the new 4-jaw chuck-------- Just some surface "flicker" so all's well and it'll be put to first use on the Bear's tender axlebox upgrades tomorrow... Those hex head screws have now been changed to High Tensile cap head ones.... The 12 gauge green steel plate with Beds Leicester on it is part of a job lot obtained many years ago when the local GPO Sorting office upgraded their sorting frames....These were the destinantion plates attached to each 4ft high steel cage that the mailbags were hooked onto... One Postal company's scrap is another Model Engineer's stockist, as it were........That one will be fashioned into a scraper to recover the swarf on the lathe tray.....

Working the late shift at the moment so how early I rise dictates how much time I get in the workshop before work!
Today I revisited my old Stuart boiler which I had badly repaired before. The joint on the boiler tubes was functional but messy, and despite giving it a go I can't get enough heat into the silver solder to tidy it up (as I suspected as its the second melt).
However it does look a bit nicer after pickling. My main annoyance with it being that the bosses for the safety valve and the steam turret are not aligned, so whichever way I install it one will look on the skew.
I'm going to have a crack at making a small gas burner for it. I received a good book on the subject as a gift recently; we shall see if I can make it work!

Not model engineering related however one of my wife’s Mother’s Day presents was a “intelligent “ set of scales! ( from our son thank god ) The weighing of body types! Glad I didn’t get them for her as these things read bmi and the likes it told her given the data we entered and her weight her metabolic age was 70! She’s 65!! So I tried them told me my metabolic age was 64 Iam 66! She Said they must be faulty? They have to go back? Told her they seem fine to me? She was in a huff all day! Such is life! As a footnote she runs every day keeps fit so she doesn’t look too bad really!! Regards Chris
