Well ,attempted first steaming of my austerity at the club today and had a number of issues the most difficult being the petticoat pipe falling into the smoke box I am not sure how it is meant to be secured so I have asked the question. Also a piston gland unscrewed itself blocking the cross head so stopped play for the day. At least it passed the accumulation test so it has its boiler certificateš Kevan, is this a Kingscale one? We steamed one a few weeks back at a GL5 event and found the lubricator had been assembled wrong. I can't remember the exact details but the clack that is in the base of it has a shuttle on a spring and from memory they had the spring in then the shuttle blocking the outlet rather than the other way around - worth checking as this one did a few laps and started to squeak. My 4ā SRL(S) has had a bit of a deep clean after 2.5 years of inactivity, he will have a hydraulic and steam test tomorrow. Hopefully ready for a road run at the weekend. Tim

I made two clack valves for my Britannia today; not quite so straight forward as they will be sitting at a 45 degree angle so I incorporated a stainless steel spring in the body above the ball.

What did I do today? I broke my own standing start 1Km and standing start 2km speed records for an up to 1650cc production bike. 184.1mph and 199.223mph. I also raced my Ninja H2 over the same distances in the 1000cc supercharged production bike with speeds of 186.825mph and 202.192mph You're a braver man than me Gunga-din, I dipped out at 135mph on my Honda CX650TC way back late 80s. I did manage 108mph in my Reliant Robin. The speedo only read 89mph but my mate was following in his Astra GTE and informed me later of my true speed. The things we do in our youth....

Whats this it is not metal, this is my other hobby playing with wood I needed to turn a bowl which I was going to turn into a keep sake of a birth but once I started to turn it the grain was not suited for that purpose which was to pyrograph a name and date of birth on(Yes I also burn pieces of wood what a strange hobby) so I completed this one, but still need to find a suitable blank in the woodshed. It did make a change from pieces of metal even then I managed a little on the mill and rounded the second connecting rod for the Rob Roy. Anyway a partially Spalted walnut bowl was produced 10" X 2 1/2". DSCF2534 by Dalboy, on Flickr

Not so much what I've been up to but what my youngest son has been doing for me, he drafts for a job so I thought I'd get him to draw this up. He reckoned it was one of the most challenging things he's drawn. Hes working from the orginal drawings of circa 1906, & to be able to draw them you need to refer & cross check across several drawings! Once he's got this one sorted theres several more! Its the exhaust steam header from the HP cylinders to the steam header on K1 Cheers Kerrin Steam pipe by Kerrin Galvin, on Flickr

Last minute call from a friend, "Want to go steaming tomorrow?". Don't have to ask me twice, but it does mean I had to go do all those little jobs I'd not go around to! I found the time to give her a clean, for some reason if I don't she misbehaves...

After a very mediocre morning of trying to get steam up I borrowed some better coal.... whoosh, up she went. I think that answers that little question. Then blow me, my blasted regulator shaft between lever and valve sheared, I think a stess fracture but I won't know until I've stripped it.
You can understand how diesels became popular....

I've had my fair share of diesel breakdowns.... Class 47 on Reading West curve that couldn't maintain vacuum, Class 50 in mother earth in Washwood Heath yard and a class 31 with no diesel just south of Leamington Spa. Ahh... Those were the days

More of what I did yesterday no work on the Rob Roy. Day started as normal spent that time in the garden. Then came the workshop time set up 1 of my three grinders as a dedicated drill bit sharpener, then changed the blade om the bandsaw as the old one was getting very blunt and wanted to cut at an angle(this is just a woodworking saw I do need something to cut metal). Found another piece of wood more suited to what I was going to make the other day and cut that to size which was a good excuse to check the blade was cutting correctly.
As per normal the end of the day was clean up so that when I enter today I had a clean slate and less likely to trip over anything as well as loose anything, mind you I lost a bolt without even moving a step away from the bench I looked everywhere so gave up and got a replacement out then promptly found the lost one under the vice tail.
Yes you all know the lost part feeling and have a t shirt saying so.
Just having a coffee after a trip to our local butcher to stock up the freezer now off to the workshop will give the garden a rest today

Spent the morning trying to get my pillar drill running. The start/stop NVR switch went pop last week. Sent for a new switch which arrived yesterday. Put it on this morning, and nothing. Out with the multimeter, could not figure it out, possibly because i am a hopeless electrician. Then i spotted an extra terminal named A1 on the new switch. Quick internet search showed i had replaced a 4 terminal switch with a 5 terminal switch, they look the same externally. The A1 terminal need to be linked, now works a treat. This journey into wiring faults stopped work on the Lassie for today.

Yesterday (Sunday) i went for a walk in Broadway, a lovely Cotswold village, and containing a terminal station for the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. As I approached the railway bridge over the public road at the station, I noticed black smoke, which turned out to be coming from Modified Hall 7903, Foremarke Hall. I wasn't in time to walk up to the station to view the loco close up, but I did get a wonderful view of her, coming out of the station and across the bridge, tender first to take the empty carriage stock from the last train of the day back to shed. Shiny green paint, polished brass, spotless carriages, whats not to like?
Pity I didn't have my camera with me, but am now determined to go back and get tickets to have a family day out.

Following on from the bowl the other day which the wood blank was not suitable for the purpose I wanted it for, today I managed some more planting in the garden then onto this bowl which the blank was just what I wanted most of the turning work is done and started to do the layout before burning it on. DSCF2541 by Dalboy, on Flickr I also managed some more time on the rob roy but not a lot see that part in the Rob Roy thread

Today we had a working party at our club. I spent a period time sorting through draws of Imperial taps and dies to find the one required. But with no luck. (we have loads of Whitworth and BSF etc of dubious states of sharpness) The club has finally got our big Colchester lathe up and running. I tried to make up a set of fraction drills dedicated to the lathe. Having spent hours sorting through hundreds of miscellaneous drills, Imperial, Metric, number and letter ,I still could not make a full set of suitable drills! The question is why do we hang onto vast stocks of drills etc and have to waste time looking for something that is not there? Should just invest in full sets of the required drill etc and keep a small catalogued reserve? The club now has a policy that nothing can be dumped on the club as "being useful" unless accepted by a Committee member.

I reluctantly moved to Windows 10 a while ago, when I bought my new computer, from XP. I found that a number of my programs, when transferred over, and especially my A0 scanner driver, won't work with W10, so I have had to keep my old computer going as well. VERY annoying!!!
