I got the austerity on the track today. Bit of a learning curve and lots of stops to blow up to start with. When under load at low speed it sounds really good but overall it is a very hungry and thirsty beast. When running the cross head pump does a good job of filling the boiler but the hand pump is weak and too close to lots of metal corners and edges. Still can’t get injector to work☹️ Please take this in the positive manner I intend it, I view those locomotives as an excellent basis for modification and improvement. They are going to have lots of areas that you can make them more suitable to your needs. I still don't trust injectors, but I realise I'm biased and lonely on that one! A friend of mine has expressed an interest in starting model engineering so I took him and his family out to try my locomotive today. They all came back beaming (and my locomotive actually behaved, probably realising that this was important). I believe I have another convert.

Finished stripping and degreasing the smokebox, boiler bands, door dart and superheater inspection cover for priming. This evening flatted back all the parts painted black a few weeks ago ready for the gloss coat in the morning.
This is a marathon, not a sprint...
Regards,
Dan

Pete, this is indeed the Kingscale, yes it is a basis for further work. I have extended the shaft for the bypass valve, cut away the outside lip of the fire hole door rail to stop coal jamming it, rebuilt the lubricator output valve, swapped the injector, still not working. Current work list is check valve for injector and check valve in line for lubricator. Trying to figure out how to determine if smokebox is really airtight. Here is more footage of it running youtu.be/9CBPF8ajKgk

EATING CHOCOLATE CAKE. But not any old cake. This began as a gesture to buy some for a fellow modeller then turned into a free one as he had not had any the previous day. Yes it is not every day that you sit and eat with Martin Evans in the food tent at Guildford Model Engineers while chatting. He later had the great pleasure in presenting the IMLEC cup back to Billy Stock and his much modified Winston Britannia. Friend Ben Pavier also did very well, as did a little Mona coming first in the 3 1/2 section. She also did very well at Little LEC a few weeks ago with a bent axle pump rod. Yes I got to lug all 47 LBS 's out of the car, to the scales and over to the steaming bays at Reading.
Martin Evans has forgiven me for getting his photo driving at Maidstone into the magazine. "He did point out as Editor he had the final say!"

Well I picked up a 3.5" gauge Mona today. Seems a very nicely made example.
Never been run under steam but runs on air. I'll try and get a fire in it soon and post a photo or two.
Pete.

Looks like a nicely made example, Pete. Does she have the LBSC designed Hackworth valve gear or one of the later Stepgenson's versions that Don Young and (I think) others suggested?

Malcolm Hi Malcolm, I've seen the drawings and have looked underneath but I don't know which is which on this model to be honest! Doesn't look as obvious as a Sweet Pea v my old Polly loco. Tried to put some water in the boiler but need to sort out some leaking bits and pieces before any thoughts of a fire. Pete.

OK not just today but the last three days. work on the Rob Roy at a standstill waiting for some tooling first company did not have after sending wrong item. So I had a request to make a toy from wood of all things a rubbish truck and as there are no plans as such just for the main cab making it up as I go (sorry no metal was hurt in the making of this) still the rear section to make. This is what I started out doing working in wood before deciding to move to metal mangling. So from this pile See my You can see a very rough scratching on the left of the first picture DSCF2640 by Dalboy, on Flickr DSCF2653 by Dalboy, on Flickr DSCF2661 by Dalboy, on Flickr To this in three days possibly another two to three day work yet DSCF2669 by Dalboy, on Flickr

Hi Barry, Still only a bunch of bits currently i'm afraid. I did post...I think... some pics of the laser cut engine & boiler frames, plus the current start of the engine frame stretches, still more to do on these. The name plates are a significant birthday pressie to myself.
I have a large pile of casting under the bench which came from over your way. Have to say progress in the last couple of years has been far quicker than the 20 before! Once I finish sorting out the stretches & cutting down 20 x 20 angle to 13 x 13 & or 11.5 x 11.5.... had 3 meters to do I can start riveting or bolting together. At the moment 1 set of engine frames & the stretchers as i make them are held together with tool maker clamps. My pace is glacial slow compared to yours!
Cheers Kerrin

Thanks for that Kerrin. Looking forward to seeing progress in the next few years. I don't think that there will be much from me for a while ,if ever. Age is catching up. Regards, Barry
