Not done much this week, well nothing really, covid still got a grip. But decided this afternoon to have an hour, so for something completely different I pulled out Maise. First time for a long time and did a survey of what is needed, not that much really. Finish off the in cab lever for the drain cock upgrade, it was originally not fitted. Piping up boiler, a few fittings and then cladding. A couple of weeks and it could be in for boiler test, but then again. John

Today I discovered a new book, LNER based of course. This one will be invaluable for builders of Gresley Pacific's, especially an A4. The book is titled 'The Overhaul Picture..Sir Nigel Gresley' by Trevor Camp. It's basically a pictorial of SNG's recent overhaul with over 500 pictures. I have used many of these photo's for my own research from the online blog detailing the overhaul. I spotted this new book on the Gresley Society FB page, or was it the LNER society?..🤣 Here's a link to the product, needless to say I have already placed my order..🙂 sirnigelgresley.org.uk/mob-overhaulbook-order.shtmlPete

I had a good day at the track. Steamed lovely. My water pump is still a bit finicky though. Only actually starts pumping once going a fair speed, then its fine. I wonder if its sucking in air.

Not much from me on the Model Engineering front I am afraid. However, I saw an opportunity to make a nice clock for the clubs signal box. A relative was chucking out a wooden clock. It had a brass bezel and Roman numeral face and I had the idea. I scrounged a piece of mahogany and run it up in the lathe. The body which houses the clockwork mechanism was knocked up out of scrap bits plus some decent thin ply from wagon building. To hide the inappropriate word Quarts I made a brass label. My workshop is in an elderly wooden shed, and with the current hot weather the end wall has warped and moved the position of the lathes overhead countershaft which is fixed to it, making the belt go slack, so I've had to insert a strut between the top of the bench and the countershaft mounting to tension things up again. This meant squeezing into the corner, up against the bandsaw, which I don't use very much. Ever since I 'reorganised' the workshop, about a year ago, I haven't been able to find my Reliance drill grinding jig, meaning that any drill grinding has had to be freehand. I was giving up hope for the Reliance, but when I was in the bandsaw corner, there, on top of the bandsaw table, in full view, was the Reliance, in its red box, complete with instructions. Honestly, I could have seen it at any time, but didn't. I suppose I was expecting to see it on the opposite side of the workshop, near to the grinder, which is where an organised person would have put it-----.

The best place to hide anything is in plain sight! I've had lots of searching practice.

Still working on the Rob Roy coupling rods I will post an update soon. In the meantime I needed to make something up for a dial gauge so I could use it on the lathe I tried to keep it as simple as possible by using the stop that came with my machine rather than make something from scratch. Anyway a simple block drilled and screwed to the side of that made a great mounting point for the gauge and by doing it the way I have I can use it either side of the carriage. The first photo with it all together the second with the block and the screw to hold it in place which when not in use can be stored in the box(Third photo) with the gauge so as not to have it sticking out when using the stop. Maise coming together surprisingly fast, might bite the bullet and hold other projects for a couple of weeks to finish it.

There's a major fire less than teo miles from me with no sign of the fire brigade yet. It's been burning for at least an hour online video on FB shows at least two houses on fire and a block of flats with the fire still raging out of control. What's more the wind is blowing in this direction...we can see smoke on the horizon with the smell getting stronger.
Not good, hope no one has been hurt?

What have I done today? Walked the dogs at 6 am, when it was nicely cool, went to the supermarket at 8 am to stand near their chiller, and get a few things. Since then stayed inside and sweated. Tomorrow is supposed to be 14 deg C cooler---.

Today I went and visited my new workplace. I've finally built up the courage to start work as a contractor. Currently I work for the Royal Navy (through another company) at one of their Flight Simulator Facilities and although the work always feels useful, it does rather feel like I've gone from being an aircraft engineer to being a computer engineer. Not really a change I ever wanted to see happen.
So in September I start working on vintage aircraft for the Fly Navy trust. Seafire, Swordfish, Sea Fury, Sea Hawk, Wasp, it's a job I could never have dreamed would come my way. For the first time in years I'm eager to get to work....

My youngest boy is currently at a certain establishment in Plymouth. If he passes that he then goes on to air engineering training. Pete.

Well done Jon. In my younger years wanted to get get a job as an aircraft engineer unfortunately at the time the aviation industry was in the doldrums. Finished an apprenticeship in fitting machine before the Australian car industry hit the doldrums and changed direction hoping to become an aircraft photographer for Flight International. I still maintain my aviation interests which remain to this day. Just caught up with a friend who has just restored a DH - 84 Dragon back to flying condition.
Regards
David

I got the austerity on the track today. Bit of a learning curve and lots of stops to blow up to start with. When under load at low speed it sounds really good but overall it is a very hungry and thirsty beast. When running the cross head pump does a good job of filling the boiler but the hand pump is weak and too close to lots of metal corners and edges. Still can’t get injector to work☹️

Yesterday popped out and collected a steel draw unit so that I can fill yet more space with tools. Does making pizza count as what I did today, spent a little time just cleaning some of the castings for the Rob Roy should be able to get and do some more work on it tomorrow.

Bought this on a whim yesterday from an advertiser on the HW website, wanted one since I was a kid and they had them on display in the window of our local hardware store, used to dream of the wonderful projects I could build using it! Fifty years or so on and I got one I feel some tinkering coming on!!

I just bought another ML7 and extricated it from the former workshop of a model engineer. It has been sat since he died 31 years ago and is very mankey however it looks to be in better condition than the one I have already. I just added another project to my never finished list🤣
