I often pick up things from the tip, they are friendly to me. I have in the past picked up a couple of coffee machines, both were thrown out because the pump had packed up! I like strong coffee, as do all Spanish people, so UK coffee is awful, except expresso to me.

Sounds like you're well set up Neale :)
Jem, what does it take to replace these pumps? Just the pump or also some electronics driving them? I don't know if they're just given mains power and do their thing if there's much circuitry involved. There must be some logic because I think a coil is switched on and off to make the pump go.

Get another photo in the Model Engineer which I read today. The photo shows the correct way of decorating a Christmas tree in a Model Engineering household.

Sorry David I dont know, I got the coffee machines to see how they worked, and if it was easy to repair, but I think it is just that the pump was broken.
best wishes

I've been fighting to make a blower valve today. I just couldn't get the seat to seal. I'll have another go tomorrow, tiredness was blunting my already not very sharp mind!

I am at the Newark bike show, my race bike is on display on the Straightliners stand. The white bike in the middle won the award for technical merit. It is a home built bike with exquisite machining, steam powered and very fast, 0-60 in 1 sec Mine is the bike next to the No23 bike 20230106_154501 by Sigma Projects, on Flickr

Club Running today with miserable rain, so we packed our bag with some small stuff. Very well attended and we even got driven round later when friend Mike turned up. I Mostly call his trains ROYAL ones as at the height of his career was mostly chosen to drive for the Queen mother. They needed a driver who did not have a SPAD. So Mike being head of signalling was shown how to drive. One way round the problem. He had a last bash on the Midhants until his eyesight got too bad.
Pigs might fly and an Adams radial with a rake of green coaches in OO was also enjoyed by a younger member at 10 years. Mike had an 80th birthday about 5 years ago.

Yesterday the window people turned up to fit the new patio doors so that is now all of the windows and doors replaced so no workshop time as well as today as I moved 8 bags of compost and manure up to the top of the garden. Now prep for the sowing of seeds begins first job is to deep clean the greenhouse ready for the seeds to be potted and sorted, I will however find time for the workshop

Gave up on trying to find the number 4 castor and visited Toolfix for slightly bigger ones. Fitted in place on new chest of drawers so painted it with dilute PVA to seal the MDF. The top of which will be a space for the Stent cutter grinder.
Quote of the day from neighbour Ian. "This workshop is warmer than the house!!!" OOPS Workshop is better built than the house. New record from THE HOTTEST DAY EVER RECORDED. 2022. Cut a 1" bar in vice in workshop during the day to prove the insulation. Just don't open the door.

Not quite today, but just recently I undertook a training course on the Bluebell Railway. Thought the forum would be interested in this sectioned injector. This was used by Stewarts Lane men in the Mutual Improvement Classes. What fascinated me is that the moveable cone has small fins on the outside (the side we cannot see here) so that when it moved it would reseat slightly differently each time, thus minimising wear.

I spent the day at working stripping a brake bias valve from the Swordfish (made by Dunlop, as fitted to Spitfire and Hurricane) to find out A) how it works and B) why it was leaking air so badly (its a pneumatic system). Was very educational. Turned out to be a seal blown off its seat.
When I got home I carried on plumbing up the Britannia's tender. Next test is 1.5x followed by steam test, so I wanted to be as ready as possible with the feed bag.

My boy is currently learning to service old Sea King helicopters as part of his apprenticeship in the Mob. He is due to move onto the real thing (he's chosen Wildcats) in 3 weeks. I wonder what he will be doing years after I have gone. Pete.

Hello, for a friend I printed the wheel models for the foundry with the 3D printer and the filament "PolyCast". Hope that the casting goes just as well. Radmodell_01 by Helmut Jarosch, auf Flickr Regards Helmut

I've just been watching 'Oh Mr Porter' starring Will Hay, on youtube. Great fun, plenty of steam loco action, filmed about 1937, I think. If you don't know the story, its set in Ireland, but I don't think it was filmed there, the tracks don't look to be wide enough for 5' 3" gauge. And not an EV in sight!

Today I bought another diesel car and I won’t be worrying about running out of juice on my trips to Aberdeen 🙂

Over the weekend I gave the NSW B class mogul another test on air to ensure there are no gross leaks and that the lubricator still works before putting boiler & smokebox back on.
I had to make a couple of fittings so I could both control the air going in and avoid the oily exhaust coming out hitting the ceiling again! I made a fitting that allowed a length of garden hose to be put on the exhaust and into the bin.
It still all seemed to work and the screws that used to unscrew themselves in the valve gear remained in place. Spots of oil came out of the cylinder drains and the level went down.
The only leak I found was the front left cylinder drain doesn't quite seal. I'm sure it's not bad enough to worry about.
The beat sounded nice and even to me.

On Saturday it was so cold at the club that what should have been a quick test of my new pressure gauge turned into a saga with kettles of hot water to stop the pipes freezing in the test rig.
We got there in the end thankfully.
Pete.

Awhile back I “over engineered” an after cooler for my air compressor using an after market oil cooler. It works great no water in the tank with general shop air requirements. Humidity around here tends to be above 70% most of the time. Well a couple of days back I gave it a work out, had some bead blasting to do, well the trap did a pretty reasonable job of trapping the water but some still got thru. The cooler has no fan, just natural draft, inlet temp was around 85C outlet around 45C, ambient in the shop 25C, that gives me another 20 to 25 degrees of cooling available. A friend gave me some 4” 230v computer muffin fans in pairs all nicely mounted ….. time to sort out the best way to mount them on the cooler A quick test today showed with them running blowing up over the cooler kept the outlet temp at 25 while the inlet rose to 50
Cheers Kerrin
