Had a busy few days here in Northland NZ. My new workshop was handed over by the builders last week, so it’s time to get all my machinery and tooling out of storage and set my workshop back up. The fun part was moving the lathe and mill, thanks to a pallet trolley and a 1t lifting gantry it all went to plan.

Well over the weekend spent 2 days at Rugby playing trains. Numbers down on last year but more space on the track until our electric unit shorted out. Mtronics £250 for a new one and no help as it is a potted unit. The bit that failed was a bit never used. Cover losses and go for 4QD. At least they have more support and some checking videos on You Tube.

I enjoyed my visit to one of the Rugby MES narrow gauge days before I emigrated. It was a chance to run my Wren on its “home” track as it’s builder is a member there.

Finished repacking the hand pump ram then started investigating the steam injector system in detail, including reading the (many) threads here and DAG Brown's book. This is going to get interesting...!

Got my Acorntools shaper project running today for the first time, very relaxing watching it swish back and forth with the click of the feed ratchet. Vice and clapper box still to clean and paint, and some touching up to do, hopefully finished soon. Fed up with cleaning and painting but it felt worthwhile when it was up and running today.

I ran my maxitrak planet on one for years, always intending to upgrade, but it did everything just fine. Cost £12.

Pays to nip any overheating problem in the bud.

Sadly it sat upon a 6" Square by 1/2" slab of steel and never got hot until Saturday afternoon.
Today we helped out with Public running in the heat. And I faced off another Sandbox for Nigel Gresley.
Yesterday we drove down to Andover and blasted round the raised level behind the ever reliable Battery Drill Driver loco. As seen of course by Martin Evans back at the Maidstone track.

Because I don't have enough projects I bought an Aircraft engine today. 10 litres of Dehaviland Straight Six. Lovely.

Gypsy Queen??
I did my apprenticeship at Rolls Royce, Leavesden. It seems a long time ago now - 1981 - but before my time it was the De Havilland Engine Company. Gypsy engines were made there in great quantities.
Are you going to run it on a stand?
Chris.

It's currently in a crate but I'll get some photos as soon as possible. The idea is to run it eventually, but at the moment I was just concerned with saving it from the scrap man.

Well not quite today last Thursday actually. I went with my friend and fellow club mate to Tunbridge Wells from Portsmouth to pick up his new boiler from Steam Technology for his Torquay Manor had a long chat with Ryan the owner and the person who made the boiler. He also made a new stainless steel super heater for the same model. While there we also saw a V2 boiler to the Michael Breeze design having its first hydraulic test, the workmanship was absolutely fantastic on both boilers seems a shame all this lovely work has to be covered up! As usual I have no connection whatsoever apart from being a friend of a satisfied customer! Regards Chris

Just thought I'd say what I've done in another of my hobbies. I build 1/144 scale RAF/FAA Aircraft kits. I'm currently building a Spitfire mk1, a Spitfire mk16 from a mk1 kit. A FAA C.V. Corsair from a USN Corsair. A RAF Catalina from a USN PBY5. A Gloster Meteor F8, an Avro Lancaster B1(special) from a mk3. An Avro Manchester from a Lancaster mk3. An Avro Lincoln from a Lancaster mk3. A Lockheed C130K (C1) from a USAF C130E. Finally a N.A. Harvard mk1 from a T6G. The reason I have several going at once is because painting an aircraft is wasteful setting up the airbrush just for less than a square inch of painting.

I am a great fan of the Catalina (my father worked on them in WWII).

I am a great fan of the Catalina (my father worked on them in WWII). Here's a pic or five of a 1/144 Hawker Tempest V that needed a rear fuselage rebuild. Two pics of the Avro Manchester conversion and two pics of the Avro Lancaster B1(special) conversion. ibb.co/VqMG6XCibb.co/31GXSZHibb.co/BBkgh4Dibb.co/nMNLMkvibb.co/MkWT4gTI haven't taken any of the Catalina yet.

Hi Steve, Have a Catalina based at our local airport, can always tell when she’s going to be flying over, only thing better than those radials are 4 Merlin’s! Sadly no Merlin’s based here.
Cheers Kerrin

Cheers Kerrin Four merlin give me a chill down my spine.... Amazing sound. Many years ago, I was working a Sunday shift. Early afternoon bus to Brynamman, I was stuck at lights in Ystradgynlais. Beautiful weather so the cab window was open. I hear this grumble from behind the bus. "I know that sound".... Immediately the BBMF Lancaster flew over not 100ft above me on its way to display at the Welsh Air Show in Swansea bay. No words do justice explaining the feeling there and then. You had to be there.
