Hi Les, 4 years ago we went to Nantan in Alberta Canada ( at the Bomber Command Museum…. Highly recommend it) at 730 a night for the 75th Anniversary of the crash over France of a Lancaster were the pilot got a VC for his heroic effort to save 3 of his crew who were badly injured, he was down to 1 engine. We stood infront of the Lancaster in the dark as they ran thru the startup procedure thru the public address system, then fired up the first, thru 4 engines! Lights then came on,They then shut them down one at a time in the order that they were lost that night. I have 15 minutes of video on my phone…. It’s just great! The other amazing thing is this is on the hard pad outside the museum which is on the side of the main road in the middle of town! There’s a wall outside the museum with the 10,000 names of the Canadian guys who lost there lives flying for Bomber command….. very sober viewing
Cheers Kerrin

Been a busy few days with a new blower valve made, just awaiting silver soldering, and a lever for operating the blowdown valve mostly finished today. Hopefully more to follow over the weekend in between British Grand Prix qualifying and the race.
Regards,
Dan

After a frustrating few days with my 7.25" locomotive I think I've had enough; its time to move it on. I thought it would all be a bit easier to work on as all the valves and fittings are bigger, but the reality is its such a lump I can't move it, I can't get round it, I have to wheel it out of the workshop when I want to work on it. Also I didn't find the society I joined to run it very enjoyable; I'm fairly relaxed and happy to just enjoy a good steam up. There were some very strong personalities who spoke to me like I was a child, so working to get a locomotive in steam with them just feels like a chore. I'm sticking with the smaller gauges.

Just had a lovely conversation with someone who told me my 7.25" locomotive was "far too small and puny" for his needs. I suspect what he needs is a course in people skills. Would you message someone to be rude? I've had a lot of interest so far though, so that cancels out the idiots.

WELL we now know a couple of guys with a set of drawings for a 15 F South African Locomotive in 7 1/4 that might be big enough for him!!! Yes a weekend at the Rugby Club and her first outing. Massive as she is a narrow gauge locomotive. We had all sorts arrive and much fun was had between showers many of us camping. One guy up from New Romney. One Guy up from Devon with his Darjeeling Tank. David and Lily.

Maybe yours is to small for him, perhaps full size is what he wants?! Jem

Well it has gone (in principle, I never fully believe it until the transation is fully complete) and I had a complete flurry of interest. Maybe I priced it too low. I'd just like to see it go to someone who will appreciate and use it.

I'm happy the locomotive has gone to the right person. He knew his onions and was realistic about the work needed doing. Back to the Britannia....

A day clamped to the milling machine. Upon looking very closely at front end photos of the Nigel Gresley noticed a very nice curve up into the Smokebox saddle plus a strengthening bracket which cried out to be made. Several ways to make including sending Ed Parrot a drawing. I grabbed a solid lump 40 by 30 and milled them from solid as a pair. I also decided to sink the lubricators into the running boards so these almost fit. I love square holes.

Well, on Monday, I had notification that my SD card on my phone was 80% full. This was due to me downloading over 100 vintage magazines. No problem, I can put it all on a flash drive with a c-type USB to standard USB adapter. Could I find the adapter -no. I looked everywhere, high, low even down the sofa. Had to order a new one. It arrived this morning so I got to transferring all the files. Ten minutes later, all done. Looked on my desk, there was the old adapter.

We have all done it!! Probably many times!! Looked at something we were looking for and not seen it. The eyes can actually see items that are in full view, but the brain just does not register them at the time. Go away and do something else and the brain will then register what the eyes see when the item is next seen, just because it is not being stressed to see the particular item. I think it is just a fact of getting older but we can be a bit embarrassed to talk about it. It happens to me very often in the workshop!! I look for something and don't see it even when in full view. I go away and do something else and turn around and there is the mic I took 15 minutes looking for but didn't see.
Bob.

My worst one was making a 127T gear for a metric translation set, and storing it away 'somewhere safe'. Several months later I needed it, but could find it? Searched high and low, but couldn't find it. I ended up making another, the hard way, from a cast iron blank, 8" dia., and having finished it, I opened the cupboard under the tailstock end of the lathe, and there, leaning up against the side of the cupboard, was the original gear! What a wally!

As, this thread has gone rather quiet, I'd thought I'd add another "what I've done 1/144th wise" From top left going clockwise..... Grumman Tarpon, Grumman Martlet, Hawker Seahawk and De Havilland Venom NF3. All less than 3 inch wingspan. Next on the board is a Spitfire mk XIV, as there are two in the box, I'll be doing a prototype Spiteful. Watch this space. ibb.co/DgSz32T

They've turned out well Les, must be tricky to paint in 1/144 (remembered from my time painting N gauge models). Today Croydon SME had its annual running day down at the Leatherhead track of the Surrey SME. CSME Leatherhead 2023 by Daniel Hamblin, on Flickr We fielded two 5" gauge locos - 'Netta' and a 'Maid of Kent' that has been modified to make it more like an L1. Our chairman was also testing his new dual electric loco set-up. A good days running and we got to see the progress being made on the Phase 2 track extension out in the meadow. This will be a pretty long 5" / 7 1/4" track when finished. Regards, Dan

Met up with Simplyloco on the Saturday at the RUGBY CLUB and had a natter. Lots of old friends and even made a few new ones. Sunday saw more models and at a time there was one too many for the steaming bays. We took our part built Nigel Gresley O1 and our trolley which saw many hours of service. We defected to the big stuff and ended up behind something LNER painted green. I am on a steep learning curve as to LNER stuff even though an ancestor got a commendation from Nigel himself.

Well, this gremlin/poltergeist/elf or whatever its called struck again. Finished the wings of the spiteful, barely got them out of the spitfire wings. Went to attach them to the fuselage....... Starboard one is missing. Looked everywhere, even in the kitchen bin. Nothing. Made a new one from Plasticard spending half of Monday making it. Goes to take the pic, half the screen is black. There's the starboard wing in front of the lens. Arrrrrgh

After the postie delivered a parcel of components from PNP railways last week. I have just about got the linkages sorted for brakes on my driving truck. Another day or so should see everything stripped out and painted ready for final fitting.

Spent a couple of days carefully rubbing down boiler cleading with fine wet and dry, filling and more sanding. Then etch primer, rubbing, primer, rubbing, fine cellulose putty, rubbing…………. you get the picture. Then prepare the work table, place boiler, prepare paint, run up air compressor, attach gun……….. then i looked at the boiler and noticed that i had completely forgotten to add the hand rail knobs………………… much swearing.
