Steam test on the Foden didn't go too well :-( The hand pump works but is too small, it needs a lot of pumping to make an impression The injector which is of unknown history and origin will not pick up The Polly safeties work very well though

You have my sympathies Andy as I suspect I'll be joining you tomorrow with a failed steam test due to the axle pump not working.
Brass gland nut appears to have a bronze ring in the centre that must have popped out on Saturday's test, which has meant me spending 3 hours tonight trying to get it to fit back in. Motion feels a lot tighter, which tells me the packing is now too tight, but any looser and this nut gets hit by the ram pin that connects it to the axle eccentric. Think a new wholly bronze nut is in order...
Regards,
Dan

My Axle pump still leaks like a demon after a few minutes. Next time she is led on her side I'll reinvestigate. Not suprised a lot of people dispense with them all together, but I do like to know its slowly topping up as I run.

Well the ring popped out of the nut again while running up and down on the Chairman's 100ft test track, but steam test passed on the hand pump and injector so I'll take that New gland nut definitely needed! Regards, Dan

I'm suprised that I actually made any steam in the Foden. The smokebox is an extension of the boiler barrel. The visible part is a wrapper around two rings, the front ring carries the door. The chimney is fixed to the outer wrapper and projects through a hole in the inner/boiler barrel extension. At the bottom is a cut out in the wrapper that the tow hitch projects through.
Effectively it is a double walled smokebox with a space between BUT the space connects the clearance hole for the chimney inside with the tow hitch aperture outside.
I Filled the annular space around the chimney, between the inner and outer smokebox with 300 deg C silicone sealant designed for sealing flues

I've used that Flue sealant a few times, it seems very good but releases without too much fuss when required.

I decided that the Foden blower valve next to the chimney wasn't all that convenient. I installed a valve on the turret and piped it forward. I have wrapped the pipe with cotton string to insulate it and will give it a coat of paint to seal it

Another little mod on the Foden. The water gauge is very exposed and just above the fire hole, just asking to be broken by a clumsy shovel. I used a piece of 12mm OD x 1mm wall acrylic tube, cut a slice out of the back and clipped it over the nuts. Not very prototypical but a quick and easy way to protect the glass 20231002_104406 by Sigma Projects, on Flickr

I like that sort of fix Andy. Simple and quick.

What a good idea! once again I'm left wondering " why didn't I think of that" I've caught the gauge glass firing on the run before, fortunately not breaking it, but this is a great idea easily removable for display. Nice one Andy.

I don't even think it would need removing, its barely noticeable. Has the heat affected it at all?

Get some silver solder on the cracked gauge blowdown cock handle, before it snaps off (bound to happen at the most inappropriate moment).

Just replaced two fluorescent light units in the workshop with LED battens. By heck they are bright...

Done mine in the workshop about a year ago, much brighter and a whiter light, took a bit of getting used to but am very glad I done it. The one thing I don’t miss is the flickering and flashing when the fluorescent lights were turned on, the LED ones are instant.

Installed a 150mm CBN wheel on my bench grinder today, I found one that had 40 mm on the side as well as the face, it does a great job on HSS !
Still trying to work out why it cost an arm & a leg to get it across the gap between Australia & here!
Cheers Kerrin

I fitted an 8” CBN wheel to my grinder a couple of years ago. From memory it cost $250, and worth every penny. The abrasive on the side is a huge benefit. Grinding thin parting tools for injector making is easy.
