pouring with rain again, so ive been making up some batches of cones and unions for pipework, and doing some of the pipework. ive found i have some lengths of 9/64th dia thinwall copper tube which i might as well use up and this has necessitated making non-standard cones to be silver soldered on the ends to fit standard union nuts.
the gloomy bank holiday weather is ideal for silver soldering and annealing copper tube.

Got woken up by hot air balloons about 7. We've got a balloon festival on here down the park. Moved the lawn and finished machining the new buffer.
The weather today up here is good so I've mowed the lawn. Tick off another SWMBO job.

Spent the morning sorting out the chaos in the club workshop and got a few items into labelled draws. In the afternoon did a boiler test and clipped tickets for the people having rides. So much for a day off on leave. Cannot go back to the club tomorrow for the Friends and Family Weekend as SWMBO will not issue me a pass.(:-)

spent yesterday on the car...treated the area that had been previously welded with POR15 to ensure no more rust, rebuilt one of the lower arm ball joints and adjusted the front wheel bearings in preperation for our trip around Wales in just over a weeks time...today transferred all of my son's koi to a temp pond as we need to rebuild the old pond which has sprung a leak probably due to the adverse weather of late and the clay that we have for soil. Tomorrow we start to knock the old walls down as long as the 22k ltrs of water that the pond holds has been pumped away over night. Will rebuild with concrete blocks laid on their sides for extra strength...should be fun....not... Pete

Spent the weekend changing sockets down on the coast, 9 done 5 more to go, though each one required a new pattress box digging in to the wall. I came back late due to heavu traffic and thought I will just press on the wheels for my GWR Toad. Set everything up and started to press, BANG, wheel in two pieces and showed evidence of a significant crack (these wheels were liberated from an earlier driving truck).
So I am now faced with trying to find another casting (about 4.5" 8 spokes 7 1/4" gauge just in case you have an odd casting lying about!) or machine one from solid. I think that this project maybe taking a short break...

more rain and gloomy weather today, and so more annealing of copper and silver soldering pipework.
i think we've had only 2 hot sunny days in south wales this august - so i hope pete (greenglade) and sheila have better weather here next week!
cheers, julian

nearly forgot, i also did a revised draughting arrangement for Roger's Speedy this morning. only took a few minutes as Roger supplied all the relevant data and thankfully the chimney and petticoat pipe is 'long' and the scale chimney diameters fitted in nicely so the calculations were straightforward.

Down south for a course and I'm in a "cruiser" I haven't been in since I was in my twenties next to the coventry corridor.
Memories flooding back of times long since past after a few "wets"

Cleaning out some drill cuttings from the hydrostatic lubricator on the Polly 1.
A bit of a saga this.
A joint was leaking and it turned out the union nut had split. It took me several goes to make a decent new length of pipe. In order to join the pipe to the fitting, I had to enlarge the hole in the fitting to receive the nipple.
Silly me left some cuttings in the fitting and these blocked the tiny hole after a few minutes steaming.
So, another test steaming, hopefully tomorrow.
If successful, I think I am down to one remaining mechanical problem. This is due to a previous owner who enlarged the thread of the screw which passes through the die-block, and which comes loose after a lengthy run. (The other side is all original and works perfectly.) The screw locates in a bracket attached to the expansion link. Polly do a replacement part for about £120, or I can try and make it myself. Decision to be made at some other time.
Anyway, she is basically running exceptionally well with a nice exhaust sound.
The paintwork isn't great, but that is a long way down my list.
Whilst it has been a case of 2.0 steps forward and 1.9 back, it has been very rewarding getting to this stage.
Pete.

hi Chris, my Grandad was in Burma late 1944 to 1945 and Burma Star Veteran, so your post was very poignant. hope you get to test the injectors on your 5"g Manor on your return! on a similar subject ive been trying to sort out John Johnston's Chiverton injectors for his lovely 5"g Brit - both of which had 'damaged' steam cones. i wasnt sure where to post this... it follows on from John's (JJ) posts about his Chiverton injectors on the following thread modeleng.proboards.com/thread/10872/cleaning-miniature-loco-injectors?page=2#page=1John has 2 Chiverton injectors on his lovely 5"g Brit, one is of medium size 26oz per min delivery, and the other a small injector of 18 oz per min delivery. i had a good look at both. a considerable amount of the steam cone nozzle ends was missing on both injectors. John added a pic of one of the original damaged steam cones on the above thread. i sorted out the small injector with a new steam cone and works very well. the medium injector - which appears to be an 'odd' size, has required a great deal of experimentation and time as defies all the usual rules on these gadgets, and ive failed to get it working at 90 psi, though 30 to 75 it's ok, and ok at 80 with a well known trick. anyway much playing about in the garden this morning with one of my locos in steam acting as a test rig for injectors for the third time with John's injectors! cheers, julian

as we had very good weather today, i cleaned out my coal shed (for loco coal). main object was to remove an old gas fire to take up to the tip that went into the shed 2002. not much salvaged off it. steam coal has been re-arranged and sorted.
at the back of the above shed was an old bell bearing off the Newport Minster IOW bells dating from 1917. Warner's patent self aligning bearing (plain). (Warners bells are the chiming bells on Big Ben). a very nice piece of cast iron forms part of the above which i reckon i can make all of Stepney's sandboxes out of plus 4 of 6 brake shoes... waste not want not!
so quite a productive afternoon!
cheers, julian

Hi Julian haven't had chance to test them yet! Had to power wash the patio! Did manage to get to track Sunday but only taking fares etc, fingers crossed for this week! Cheers Chris ps while in Bangkok I did go and pay my respects to the troops that didn't make it back. The cemetery is very close to the bridge.

Started to fit a ply lining kit to the back of my crew cab vivaro.
Needless to say none of the parts fitted so the jigsaw came out to play in the sunshine.
I need to work out how to secure all my loco paraphernalia and at the same time make it easy to swap over for SWMBO to accommodate her cycling kit (which usually means 2 or 3 of her friends bikes as well!).
Pete.

Nothing grand but busy.
I suppose that trying to get a Death Certificate for a recently departed wife is - well- allowed.( clears throat)
Meantime, kind regards to you all.

Norman Norman, how desperately sad. If it happens to me I will fall apart for sure. If it wasn't for my present wife I don't think I would be here at all. Sympathy and regards, Pete.
