Before I start committing time to calculations I hate doing and time on the CAD learning to anitmate as well as trying to construct a design, is there a method for designing sliding type firehole doors someone could share?
I've got a copy of a 1953 article by H E White B.Sc. but frankly it's utter crap, unless there's another article correcting the errors that I haven't found yet? His pair of doors are narrower than the opening in the frame, his handle doesn't connect with the doors when the doors are fitted in what appears to be the correct position in the frame, and his connecting link positions outside his shown mounting point - and I've check my CAD data twice now. Needless to say I'm a bit peeved!

Would a look at the Shortland drawings for the GWR5101/61 help as they are scaled from Swindon drawings so it would not be too difficult to resize to what you need.

Hopefully... I've got long cuts on my machine so I've made a start anyways... I hate maths....

Ed looks good to me, think you can do this by proportion also. And of course unlike you I wasn't multi-tasking............well other than breathing if that counts. Regards Paul

lol.
Working on it. I'm hoping to be able to develop a spreadsheet to create unknowns from figures that are known or fixed.

hi ed, do the arms and pivots and frame first then mark off the pivots on the doors. leave the doors too wide at first and trim so that they close in the middle of the firehole. cheers, julian

Ed, Suggest you provide a means to clear coal from the bottom rail. Either a cutout to let it out onto the floor or an open bottom track. Someone will have a picture...

Yes Ross, not detailed in yet. My Hunslet has a small section of rail missing in the middle and that never gets jammed with coal dust. Tight when it's cold but free's off when it's hot, never jams with dust though.

Nick Feast describes a sliding firehole door in his 3/4" scale Q1 build. Whilst it will have to be re-sized for other scales, he purposely avoids a bottom rail to prevent dropped coal debris jamming the mechanism. The firehole door drawing appears on ME 4383 p143.
With best wishes, Dave
