Any one suggest how I can remove the pistons from the cylinder bores, as far as I know they are threaded onto the piston rods but there is no slots in the piston faces to screw them off?.

lock lathe spindle grip rod in lathe, preferably with brass or copper shim to prevent scoring turn piston by hand voila

Forgot to mention they are still on the loco in the cylinders how do I get them out of the cylinders, How is the piston rod fitted to the crosshead.

Hi John,
According to ME Vol 99 issue 2463, page 147, the piston rods are secured to the crossheads by " a 3/32 inch silver steel pin or a bit of 13-gauge spoke wire, to act as a cotter."
Just how you will drive this pin out, you'll have to work out for yourself. I guess it is inserted from the side, whereas taper pins are usually inserted from the top downwards. And, if the piston rod is a tight fit on the crosshead, you may have to gently tap (ease) the crosshead off the rod. Means removing the connecting rods of course. Once the two items are parted, you should be able to withdraw the piston and rod from the front end of the cylinders (I hope!!).
