Advice needed on converting an Axminster Milling Machine (round column type all geared head, a copy of the EMCO I think) to CNC, i.e what size of stepper motor needed for driving the table and the quill. I don't want to buy something that's not big enough for the job, would be grateful for any advice off someone who's actually done it, Thanks

Dear Jo, I am in the process of doing a mill, and have found 2 very good suppliers. There are discussion groups for cnc worker's as well, but you have to wade through lots of chat to get to the point. Routout cnc are in Llanelli in Wales and do stepper motors drive boards and their own software. 01269 841 230. www.routoutcnc.com And Marchantdice, who also does a plug in and play systems and all the ball screws, nuts, bearings and friendly advice, he is also on eBay, but more as an advert. www.marchantdice.comI looked at Compucut but you do need the best feed screws avalable. David, Cnc should give you more time with your family!!!

hi there Compucut system is good, really powerful, will run 9 amps per axis on double Nema Stacked Steppers. Fitted to a decent heavy miller and you have an excellent system. This was designed to cut mini Turbine Blades out of Nicotol which is extremely hard. Beauty about the software and hardware is that you can fit a ring to the table, run a wire from one of the pins on the controller board to a probe in the chuck and the machine will actually find its own backlash values. It works well on standard ACME type screws, much better than the gantry systems that cut out animal shapes for the kids from MDF. But, if anyone knows of a cheap Gantry system that can compete, I would be interested. There is a couple of Compucut systems on Ebay at present.
