Good evening David,
I would hope to be with you at the rally this year, I'll bring along one of my 4Fs! don't ask, it's a long story. I was intending to get along last year but some fool decided he'd get married on the same day, totally inconsiderate.
Regards,
Bob

Hi All
Just an update for the 3 1/2" fraternity. We are in the process of getting rid of the old wooden steaming bays and putting in metal ones for both 5 and 3 1/2". The smaller gauge is supported on track inserts so ashpans can be dropped safey and easily.
Cheers david

Good morning David, Having built three of Don Young’s 4F’s my best advice is to retain the Joy gear; there is very little room between the crank webs for a set of Stephenson’s eccentrics, further you would probably have to lose the axle pump also. In building the Joy gear all you need to do is set the frames out correctly, make all the parts and assemble them, centralise the valves on the port face and that’s the end of any valve setting, simples! Should I ever consider building another 4F then I’d probably build off of the works drawings incorporating all the bells and whistles. The locomotive as designed with a little extra work can be made to resemble the 4F more closely and we are now very fortunate with the publication by Wild Swan of their series LMS Locomotive Profiles “The Standard Class 4F 0-6-0 Goods” and the supplement, both of which contain much valuable information. I have a considerable amount of information amassed over the years, build notes and sketches, photographs of my last two being constructed together with a large number oobf photographs of the full size locomotives; should you consider any of that could be of assistance in your build then I’ll copy everything and bring it along to the meeting. There’s a nice little video of one of my 4F’s running at the Sale area model engineers track, it’s funny how you recognise your own work! www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfPSkjXUufYI’m presently in the throes of getting a ticket on my locomotive ready for a trip to the Southampton 3½″ rally. Regards, Bob (4F Builder)

HI Bob I have a 4F in Gauge 0 and will bring it along. I also have an Aspinal A class in 0 gauge, these being the only two locos I retained when we sold all the smaller stuff. So you can see that a Duchess with twelve coaches is pretty boring but an 0-6-0 with forty coal trucks is great. I have always aspired to 7 1/4” but drove a member’s class 5 and it was frightening so I decided to go down a grade and found a part built 4F and bought it. So it must sit alongside my 5” Aspinal (wip) but I am sure we can fit in a few hours work. Just love the things and will look forward to seeing yours and seeing her run. In time I would love to see your detail but for now let’s just play and do the serious work later! Very glad you are coming. And we are in the process of making all of our steaming bays 3 ½” friendly. Cheers David Try this www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fz_svrTP9LE

Morning David,
I won't say good morning as probably like you there, it's tipping down here in Portslade. If you're bringing your O gaugers I'll bring my part completed gauge 1 4F as well; it started as a G1MRA Project but at times it's nearly become a projectile! My wife keeps on to me to finish it, so that maybe the next job.
I know David Mayall, the boiler registar has a nice little 4F and Mike Wheelright of the Worthing club has one, perhaps they can be persuaded to bring them along. . . . . What about a 4F rally???
Regards,
Bob

Just to say thanks to all of those who came. 12 locos in steam plus another three on display. 80 sausages on the BBQ went down well as did the rest of the feast. So I think you can put this in your diary for a repeat in 2017, end of July/ early August! Cheers David

Smack bottom for me. Simplyloco Brit was a star but kept getting shoved out of the way by the runners!! My 4F went on the floor. Just points out that we need to convert the other two steaming bays. The new ones worked super!! D

A big thank you to all involved in a most wonderful day, great company, great hospitallity. It was great to see so many 31/2" gauge locomotives together; it makes one wonder how many are lurking under benches in workshops never to see the light of day.
Regards,
Bob
