Hi. Our group of model engineers are looking at building a medium size vertical boiler as a project to to instill some boiler construction experience. We would like a VFT boiler becuase they are different, portable and do not require "wheels". I have a Martin Evans M30 type boiler myself ( below) with a Cheddar commercial boiler and the drawing set. Is there are similar boiler drawing out there in 4"- 6" diameter, or could we reduce the M30 design down to comply with the AMBSC code. This 8" boiler is quite a hefty lump to carry around. Any suggestions out there? Hayden

Winters sells 5" vertical boiler plans and smoke box top casting , at least he did , that is where I got mine that I am using on Crab .

Hi Shawki.
I guess we could always go the long way round and start from sctratch with the code book, pencil and paper etc.Test the grey matter out.
Will take a look at Winters. We have plenty of Stuart engines we can drive so that is the least of our problems.
Thanks.

GLR can supply drawings, instructions and materials for a 4" diameter vertical boiler (originally describe by Tubial Cain). I am not sure if the drawings would meet your code. I have built one but not steamed it yet, the build was straight forward.

I stumbled across a 17 inch length of 5" OD copper pipe in my workshop the other day, I forgot it was there.
When I purchased that aformentioned boiler in the photo above it came with a water supply tower, a perfect piece of 5" thick wall drawn tube. Even the base was copper, and the lid. The chap that made it must have owned a copper mine!
So now I guess I need to make a VFT for that, its worth about 150 quid just for the tube so maybe Mr K. N Harris little book on boiler design and construction might come in handy.
I need to retire.
Thanks for the info. Hayden

Hayden Whatever you do, don't retire, or at least, if you do, don't tell anyone about it! Too many people think that just because you've retired, that gives them freedom to find you something to do, to keep you occupied and stop you getting bored. No amount of protestations about the stuff you want to do, and have been looking forward to doing, in your workshop, will convince them otherwise.

Harris's book has a 6" design with superheater and also a shorter 5" design without, might need a bit of updating for your code but would be a starting point. There was also a very good build thread on a 6" recently on MEM forum based on the Reeves RV62 drawings, you will need to register to view the large number of attached photos www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,5434.0.html
