I've got a Dremel, for which I have made a tool-post mount so that I can cross-drill with it etc.
However, the aluminium collets that Dremel supply don't do the main bearing justice; they're not at all precise, not least because the sizes in the set are too far apart.
Anyone know where to get steel or brass ones that fit, or has anybody successfully made their own?

I use the little multichuck which is like a small drill chuck no need for any collets then. Its Pt No 4486 and is a genuine Dremel accessory. According to their website it accepts from 0.4mm to 3.4mm shank. Which is the range of the colletts but is of course infinitely variable.

I looked at the chuck at the same time I bought the collets, and I thought the latter looked a better bet. I was "off" chucks at the time because a couple of weeks previously I had bought a small 1/4" capacity chuck (made by Draper, I think) which was a total waste of time and money.
Perhaps I'll look again next time I am in town.
Thanks,

It certainly works well for me in drilling. I have also used it to hold cutters for cutting slots in my model railway baseboards. I find it much better than the colletts simply because it is variable and so will hold any size drill up to 1/8" very well.

I wholeheartedly agree with George on this one... the Dremel chuck is brilliant, ...that is until it decides to throw a complete wobbly...that is when you try to open the chuck and the whole thing screws off of the drill...I cured the problem with some mild acting Loctite. I tend to agree with cristopher in that the Collets are utter C..p, and am thinking of making a set from brass. The eletronic control on my dremel I personally think is too fast even at the lowest setting for very small diameter drills? All the best for now, John.
